Have You Seen the Barbie Movie? is It for Adults or Kids?
Ask a Question
Keep seeing the trailer for the new Barbie movie but cant seem to find a clear answer on whether it is aimed at adults or children?? Have you seen it?? What are your thoughts?
It has an American PG 13 rating but I don't think there is much guidance with ratings anymore. There are lots of 15 films I have seen that I would cringe if I thought my kids had watched them at that age.
According to the cast, the film works on “different levels” for different audiences.
Barbie movie has been rated a 12A.
British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC), films given this rating usually contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. This also means that no one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless they are accompanied by an adult over the age of 18.
The BBFC said it gave Barbie the 12A rating because it contains “moderate innuendo, brief sexual harassment and implied strong language”.
I had just presumed it was aimed at kids but obviously I'm wrong. It Seems strange to make it aimed at adults as my little girl would of loved it.
I assume its approved by Mattel so you would think it would be very child friendly to help promote Barbie toy sales. Surprised if its not which I guess is the case with a PG 13 rating. Maybe Mattel were hoping for a lower rating.
I have seen bits and pieces about this but I hardly go to the cinema so won’t be watching it until it comes on tv.
From the reviews i read the jokes are aimed more at adults and the film is surprisingly self aware. A lot of critics said it was really funny. I have no idea really what it’s about beyond barbie.
Ok thanks guys. I think we will go. There is not much on and we have the unlimited tickets so might as well.
Judging from the previews and interviews it sounds too politically corrected and both actors are far too old be playing the characters of plastic dolls.
I'm just home from a screening of Barbie. I didn't see anything that would be considered problematic for young children. I believe they would appreciate the visual spectacle of the film. Some of themes are geared more towards adults, but they were handled in the same way you would find in Disney films. A lot of the audience were buzzing after the screening and gave the impression they really enjoyed the film. I thought it was just OK. I found it to be annoying at times. I didn't enjoy the overly preachy tone. No surprise that it oozes politically correctness.

In the U.K. it's 12 while in other countries it's 7 (Sweden), All (Israel), PG (Australia), 9 (Netherlands), 13 (America), so... It varies from country to country.
I'm personally not very interested in watching it, it doesn't look all that great.
My partner. And girl s have been driving us mad. So we going to see it on Wednesday evening
I think smaller kids would be a bit disappointed as the storylines will go over their heads and they will get bored.
I would presume its for children, there's loads of Barbie merchandise in most of the shops.
TiaTia so did I. Wrong. I watched with my kids a frequently cringed at it. Not suitable
It has a lot of adult humour, which I didn't expect for a kids' film, so I'd say that it's OK as long as an adult goes with them to see it
This film promotes all the things which is being forced upon kids which is for adults only sadly alot trying to make it a norm
It is aimed more for adults. When I went there were some children from age 5 There. It is definitely not suitable for young children - guideline would be 12 and over
I usually watch 12a things with my children and have no issue but I do not recommend the Barbie movie for younger kids for many reasons.
I've not watched it myself but my cousin took her little girl aged 10 and both said it was naff and not worth the money
I've seen the adverts for it but I won't be going. I used to love Barbie when I was younger but I won't be going to see it, I never go to the cinema anymore as it is quite expensive.
Will watch probably when inevitably on the telly. I don’t really enjoy cinema any more. I’m more a Sindy girl anyway .
I read an article this morning saying that women were dumping their partners because of the Barbie movie!
