Do you groom your Dog with a short cut in the Summer ?, not always advisable

Other

With the weather getting increasingly hotter it is our natural instinct to send our pets to the groomers for a short trim to try to keep them cool

But it is not always the best thing to do, it depends on the breed of the dog

Short haired dogs dont benefit from this and it can cause sunburn

Besides in some breeds the long coat acts as an insulator against the heat

Some other suggestions to keep them cool

Put them on top of a cool wet towel, cooling mat or place them in the breeze of a fan. Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water. Pour cool water over the dog's feet, ears and head. Never use ice or very cold water as this can cause shock.

What do you do to keep your pets cool in this heat ?

Some dogs (like my border collie) shouldn't be shaved as they are a double coated breed. A good dog groomer will give the best advice if anyone isn't sure 🙂

  • Always keep them inside during the hottest parts of the day, walk them early in the morning and late in the evening when it goes cooler on hot days.
  • Keep refreshing water
  • Give them an ice cube to play with (or a dog cooling toy)
  • Get a pet pool/sprinkler pad
  • Get a cool mat (these are quite cheap in B&M)
  • Keep curtains closed during the day

I'd never advise putting a wet towel on them, this can actually trap heat between them and the towel 🙂

SamGoodship Thanks for the extra advice S, much appreciated

The advise about the towel is only to let them lie on it wet not to put over them as you rightly said

Another tip mentioned in the article is to let them lie close to a fan when it is extremely hot , but not too close as to cause eye problems with dust etc, this could cause conjunctivitis

If i have missed any tips out please post, anything to help keep our pets cool , that goes for any animals

Ps, i have just read we have had the hottest week ever recorded with the highest temperatures in the world for over 120,000 years, i dont know how they can calculate this but it is what is in some newspapers , so more reason for us and our pets to try to stay cool 😰

Another tip is to use suncream, usually white breeds will need this. My JRT always needs his snout doing

I imagine that dogs are very capable of coping with the changes in the weather, they never used to be pampered as they can be today.

Its the same with kids T, we give them everything they want because we care so much.

There is another reason for keeping their coats short in hot weather though , that dreaded word 'fleas'

Besides giving them drops or tablets to prevent them keeping the coat short helps
