The idea is that it is a placeholder, but surely part of the fun is that you get surprised with the actual ring, right?
I think surprising a woman with an engagement ring that:
a) Probably won’t fit and will need to be re-sized
b) She may not like (but pretend she does)
c) She may wear for decades
is romantic, but a big mistake. A placeholder is a great idea.
My wife and I chose the design of her engagement ring together at a very posh jewellers. At home she then drew a circle the size of the diamond she wanted on a matchbox that I took back to the posh jewellers alone - to avoid discussing budget and price, (and haggling!), in front of my fiancee.
I soon discovered the diamonds I could afford would drop straight through that circle without touching the sides! I quickly had to learn all about the 4Cs - cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.
In the end I got a fantastic deal through a jeweller friend, who had the design copied, and many years later my wife still loves her engagement ring and often gets compliments about it - it is a very pretty ring. The main stone is smaller than the circle she drew, but has a superb cut.
These days I recommend reducing your costs by cutting out the middlemen, shopping online at places like cooldiamonds.com

cheers for sharing the story. I understand what you mean, and your way is indeed far ore practical. But for those who still believe in romance and perhaps the higher powers that be, the ring could be the 'omen' of the relationship - if the ring did not fit, and was not to the wearer's taste, then I would question whether or not enough effort was put into the proposal (getting something pretty and suited to the individual might be harder, but surely getting the size right is something that one's partner is able to easily get?)
I think if you want to get engaged but can't afford a ring then it is a good idea. It means you could use the money towards the wedding. When we got engaged my now husband told me what the budget was and I picked a ring which I loved. Neither of us saw the point on spending a fortune on a ring when we would need to pay for a wedding and we're wanting to buy a house. If you know your partner would be happy with a £1 ring then I don't see the problem
I agree. I don't even think the wedding should cost a lot either. You will have a lot of money to spend on other things when you spend the rest of your lives together
hspexy exactly! Our wedding cost a lot less than the average wedding as we got married during the week, so saved loads on the venue, the band, the photographer and I got stuff like the jewellery in the sales and we used our flowers from the ceremony as table decorations. We were lucky that our parents helped pay for some of it, which meant we could afford to pay the deposit on our house. A marriage is more important than the wedding or the ring
You said what I was going to say - most youngsters (I know I didn't) don't have the money to buy expensive jewelry etc. Many starting off married life in debt.
Perhaps jewelers could hire out engagement rings so that when the couple actually marry the ring could be returned - as it is no longer required - they're not engaged any longer.
Remember you first read it here folks
davidstockport we wanted a nice wedding but we didn't want to get into debt and we did everything within our budget.
That is a good idea about hiring out the ring, although I can imagine some women wouldn't be keen!
davidstockport sounds like a novel idea - big money to be made out of this, I think. Let's start the business now
I dont think its a bad idea , for people who dont want to waste money on a ring that their partner doesnt like ... However , i would not like to recieve one , nor would i a ring that i didnt like :/
same here - it would actually annoy me that the magical moment of getting proposed would get tarnished by the fact that the ring came from Poundland! makes you think if it was a prank
I guess the question is: do the rings look like they are worth more than £1? If so, then great
lol it perhaps looks like it is worth the money...in which case, it would not be the appropriate ring to propose with...unless you want the 'no' answer
I see this as the worst idea that can be,of course if you are not in a serious relationship you can do that
haha yes, only if you were doing the proposal as a prank, I guess it could be used in that situation
