Shops We Loved and Lost
In the News
Just saw this advert, these programs always take you down memory lane..
will you be watching? Which shops do you really miss ?
Channel 5 Thursday 8pm
Hi, you didn't say which channel it will be on. Woolworth, Blockbuster, Debenhams, Top Shop, HMV springs to mind.
jam45 it’s a shame it closed down! Last time which is a few years ago I bought a bright pink handbag lol Kipling brand so got a monkey keyring with it
Couldn’t believe it used to cost £98!! got it reduced price at think £29+ there was two bagsleft one of them the zip on front section didn’t zip up anymore
To this day there have been no problems at all! Very good quality and waterproof
Had a look on Amazon so many different styles but costs over £35!!
jam45 oh is that so! Is it your first time ordering with them online? If they aren’t right you then have to post the clothes back for refunds! Is it free to do so?
Kind of a hassle lol back then when you order online if need to return for refund easy to take back to shop!
Yeah even before Debenhams closed down I bought clothes from Sainsbury’s, always had half price sales even with 25% off on top of the sales offers!
Haven’t bought from the supermarket in a long while now
jam45 Omg that’s awful yeah our damn sofas the seats have all sunken down! Pieces falling off pfft cause it’s plastic got the set of 3 from stupid dads uncle when I said don’t bother they won’t last long pfft didn’t listen
Exactly it’s hard to buy furniture without going to see them in person in shop to sit on them so you know if comfortable or not and know the size and see what material is used to make them!
Yeah their so called sales are Damn ridiculously expensive!!
jam45 it’s okay nice to chat with another member on here! I see yeah it’s still a lot of money buying a new sofa! I need a new mattress lol
Sofa we got from dads brother so rubbish needs to be thrown away too
Getting a new one for dining room and they can take 3 items to throw away free of charge I think so May get rid of a sofa in living room
No idea how to get that one out and get new one inside to dining room
Always gonna be woolies missed the most for me have many memories of shopping there as a kid, great price, great stuff
wonderingsoul I think I remember seeing not only the huge rows of plastic boxes full of sweets that you can mix and match but also when it was Xmas season and they were playing the seasons music they had huge Xmas lol ans it was the first time I saw them as a kid
kitty88uk oh yes the massive sweet wall no other shop like it and yeah I remember they used to go all out for Christmas though how any shop assistant puts up with constant Christmas I don't know
- JLouM I’m with you on them three. I still manage to visit to C&A when I go abroad. Not as cheap as it used to be.
I remember going shopping with my mum in Kwik save & Bejam, l use to clothe shop in Chelsea Girl & Tammy
As a kid I loved all the electrical stores like Rumbelows, Wigfalls, Lasky's, Dixons, Supreme, Comet etc. Just loved browsing the stores and seeing all the electronic stuff. Lots of it was British Made too, British made televisions, computers, appliances etc. A different world and stuff was expensive enough that you wouldn't buy it unless you really needed it. Nowadays we seem to buy so much stuff with a short life that ends up in landfill.
martinlufc5637 yeah that’s all I remember from when I was a kid used to go there a lot with parents to buy all sorts of items but definitely remember the pick and mix sweets so colourful but expensive to buy them
I miss Woolworths, Woolco, Tandys, Fine Fare, Carrefour, Gateways, Begams, & Kwick Save. There are probably more but cant think just now.
Emerge11 Carrefour opened in Britain? Never knew that.
Carrefour is massive in Spain and of course, in France (where it's originally from).
I really enjoy visiting Carrefour when I'm there as the stores are so big.
PhilipMarc Carrefour came to the UK In the 70`s then was eventually Gateway. ASDA took over. Not sure when though.
For me, it'd be Woolworths, Blockbuster, Safeway (still exists in the U.S., I think), 7-11, and GameStation.
GAME is awful in comparison to what GameStation was and I'm surprised Mike Ashley hasn't gotten rid of it entirely. He probably will at some point.
Note: Not my photo.
Woolworths was a great loss, also miss HMV and Reddon Brothers but greatest loss are the Pie and Mash shops.
I miss Debenhams, bhs and woolworths to name a few. The high street seems to be full of coffee shops and cafes now.
Definitely Woolworths for me as you could always find what you need as they stocked everything
I’ve just noticed that the program is 1 of 2 . I also miss majority of the shops you’ve mentioned. My number 1 is Woolworths like many of you but as a young girl at the time tammy girl and bay trading and top shop .It’s such a shame many of these places have gone from empty high streets.
LL81 as teen tammy girl was a favourite. We had tammy girl and snob when i was a teen.
Can’t say I miss any of them, as they couldn’t keep up with the trends. But it dies make me smile when I see the likes of C&A, Debenhams and Woolworths when abroad
Wilko for me is a big loss, they used to have such a varied range of products at good prices. Gradually went down hill thou since Covid until they finally went.
Mango4 yeah it was a good shop Wilko last item I got items from there was a reduced square pink ottoman was £12 down to £5! Very heavy to carry it while walking back to car damn arms and shoulders were aching next few days lol used to buy skincare Nivea items from there cause was the cheapest now from Superdrug only buy from there when there’s sales offers
like many others Woolworths was the main one I miss. C&A was one of the few places I could easily find clothes that I liked that were also affordable. Some of the larger record shops - Virgin megastore and HMV - although are some of these still around?
Different world these days...
I miss chosing my Pic n Mix from Woolworths, loved their Christmas stuff, always bought it..
Miss C & A, Dixons
I miss Debenhams a lot, had some good quality buys from there..
I now miss Wilkinsons, always in there
I was just about to answer Woolworths. However I can see that we are all on the same wavelength. I really don’t understand why they closed their doors, as they were popular and had been running for years .
I'm going to watch it. I've still got my woolworths Xmas tree. Got it when they closed down. Still have bowls for my ceral from there a whisk from the 90s I got it when I moved out on my own. I do miss woolworth. My branch was the one that made the most money out of woolworth is the whole of Britain
We are about to loose charts where I am. We will only have schuh and shoezoe where I am. Neither measure feet for kids. I've my own foot measure thing but it's not for everyone
Jerseydrew I've measured my sons feet before at Shoe Zone. We lost both of the Shoe zones near us, closest one is 2 and a half hours away now.
MrsCraig oooh interesting. 2 and half hour drive is a bit much. Though for me a 2 hour trip is a flight so not going to be doing that
