Speed Bumps Bring Misery to London Borough, What Do You Think about Them ?

Ask a Question

I saw this article on yahoo news , and in the telegraph online but unfortunately both links are unpostable, yahoo links never stay and the telegraph asks you to join to carry on reading it

So the only article i could find was this referring to speed bumps

I already knew some negatives about them , they increase pollution as traffic slows to go over them , they ruin your shocks , exhaust and suspension even at low speeds and cause traffic build up in some places

But these other complaints i never realised

Basically residents in London are complaining about speed bumps causing structural damage in their homes like cracks in their walls and blame heavier vehicles for this

One woman says it has given her insomnia due to the bangs and thuds when traffic pass over them that are close to her home

I know the idea was with good intentions , to help slow traffic and save lives, but there are also so many negatives

One suggestion is install more cameras in place of the bumps as these have the same result, slowing traffic , and a speed bump cannot recognise speeders and give fines

What is your experience of them , should they be removed and an alternative be put in place ?

There's a few roads where I am I avoid cos of speed bumps. We've a number of 20mph zones. Bloody annoying.

Oh Telmel don’t get me started! I have always detested and disagreed with them right at the beginning. As you say it ruins the underside of your car but that’s not the worst problem. The amount of medical issues people have are aggravated by going over them and cause more harm to the condition. Ambulances also have to go over them - at speed! 🙄. Imagine being a patient in an emergency. I’m sure it makes it worse. Also if you are just a stupid idiot you are going to speed anyway as I see a lot of it, it doesn’t stop them which is what they were originally for. So in my opinion a totally useless waste of money and actually quite harmful. I’ve not heard about the structural damage issue until you just mentioned it.

I avoid a lot of roads in our area because of them, my mother in law has just had them outside her home, she's been complaining about the banging and noise

martinlufc5637 Whoever invented and designed these things must have been having a bad day M

Where is the thought and risk assessement that is supposed to have gone into them ?

It must have been ' I know, lets place a big piece of concrete in the middle of the road to slow down the traffic ' and everyone agreed

suevernon1968 Where my parents live there is a speed bump with a large pot hole dead in the centre! Double whammy 2 for 1!
