How Much Do You Spend on Wine? Is it more than this?

In the News

The UK government spent £97,189 restocking its wine cellars in the last two years, according to government hospitality figures published last week.

I have to confess that they do spend a little bit more than I do 😲

This is clearly another expense that we the taxpayer pay for for them! Is that fair?

Omg no nope no chance. I'm a cheap date. Give me a cheap bottle. I don't really drink. I can live without alcohol and only drunk a handful of times this year as I can live without. If I do buy I buy a cheap bottle of processco or cheap Rose. Yes an expensive bottle can taste lovely but it's money

Jerseydrew 'Posh' wine is so expensive and I am not sure it lives up to the hype. I like a glass or two but couldn't spend that much if I tried!

I spend zero on wine as can't stand the drink, just tastes like decomposing grapes which is what it is. Always seems like a waste of good grapes to me. I understand for international events and diplomacy you can justify giving them expensive wine but personally I would only offer wine produced in the United Kingdom to international guests which will likely be much cheaper although less prestigious. The government should be promoting UK wine where possible. Poverty is getting worse in the UK and likely to get much worse but politicians always seem to justify spending a lot on themselves and really need to think about cutting back what they are spending.

BonzoBanana I don't think it is on the uk governments agenda to provide or promote British products in any way 🥴 but there are some lovely English wines produced that they could buy instead of imported wine.

Notwithstanding that I agree that they by spending this much just on wine they are increasing the divide between those who have something and those who don't.

tumblespots To be honest I've no understanding of the logic of British politicians, utterly clueless individuals that do more damage than good. Almost 100% of their focus should be getting the economy into a good state with a trading surplus and living within our means instead we just get moronic nonsense and focusing on minor issues most of the time.

BonzoBanana Sadly they are more interested in feathering their own nests rather than thinking of what the country needs. We have no statesmen any more and no-one who is really interested in putting things right.

I’m pretty sure that I can safely say no one on this site or any other money saving site spend that much on wine.

another example of how the government takes the mick out of us normal hard working people. £100k on wine when people are struggling to heat their homes and feed their families

jms19 Exactly, they get the cream of the crop, paid for by us, and we suffer because out WFA is taken away and we have to make a choice between eating & heating. Image

Not surprised at reading that tbh, probably all funded with the tax payers money as well whilst they sit there and laugh at people struggling

It could be an investment ? People make fortunes by buying and selling vintage wines . Perhaps Rachel Reeves would then sell it off like Gordon Brown did with our Gold reserves ?

Tax payer funded wine, tax payer funded heating allowance for MPs homes, tax payer funded subsidised canteen in the House of Commons…..and the list goes on. We are taken for mugs and there’s nothing we can really on a practical level do about it ☹️

It’s cheap rose wine for me £5 or less does the job 😂😂

No way would I be spending that amount of money on wine, but must be worth it or money gone to their head as well as the wine. I’d just be happy with a Pinot Grigio blush, sometimes a spritzer I’d be happy .

I love wine but never spend anything like that. Barefoot is my fav wine and I buy it when on offer for £8, but I do like another one that is £5

possy I wouldn't even pay £8 for a wine, unless I was giving it as a present to someone else. £5 is reasonable these days though (I suppose!)

HEDGEHOGS I remember being at a party once with a friend, we had another glass of wine each at the same time throughout the evening but what I hadn't realised was that they had half and half (lemonade & wine) whereas mine were all wine! 🥴
