Do You Stop Buying Nieces and Nephews Gifts When They Reach a Certain Age?

Ask a Question

Between my husband and I, we have 19 nieces and nephews. Some are approaching age 18.

Does anyone have a cut off age for gifts?

When I was younger my sister and I stopped receiving Christmas and birthday gifts from our aunts and uncles when we were 12 and 14.

We have 11 in total nieces and nephews. We stopped gifts at 18. However, we do still buy for Christmas especially if someone is hosting. I only have 2 on my side and 9 on my husband’s. I choose to keep buying for mine as I like to be close and we don’t have our own children. I do still buy for the 3 youngest ones on my husband’s side that are still under 18. Husband is ok with that.

JLouM I get that. I’m thinking about stopping at 18 as we have so many to buy for. I’ll continue to buy for the rest until they reach 18 and stop them too.

PayItForward Yes it can get silly money otherwise. At 18 they are capable of earning their own money 🤷🏻‍♀️. Different for children.

JLouM we spend the same amount on all kids. Because it started off only buying 4 or 5, we were spending £50 on each of them. We are still spending £50 on each child - so Christmas is mega expensive for us. Buying the kids alone is nearly £1000 before we buy each other and our parents gifts

PayItForward Yes it all adds up but you need to discuss with your husband if you can continue at current level and if you want to.

Leannexxx maybe I’ll just buy small gifts instead of stopping altogether. We spend the same on them all (£50) and it’s just so expensive at christmas

Leannexxx Actually gift sets are a good idea. We have been known to split the products up and divide between them as to which product is most appropriate for each person. Can be cheaper to do this sometimes.

I haven't got that many in my family so I cant personally imagine stopping when they reach a certain age, we may give them a bit of money instead? but I can see why others do this if you have large families! Christmas can certainly be expensive enough as it is

That's the reason for Terrys chocolate oranges, just for nephews and nieces at Christmas. Eventually it becomes a tradition that they expect into their twenties and above!

I still buy my nephews and niece presents. I only have 2 nephews and 1 niece so it’s not too bad. If I had several then I think there would have to be a cut off point.

reannsgran as far as I know, we are the only ones buying for all the kids. I don’t think my husbands siblings buy for each others kids. But I couldnt just buy my siblings kids and leave the others out

I stopped buying nephews and nieces Christmas presents once they left school because my siblings suggested it.

Pjran no-one has made any suggestions to us lol. I think I will need to warn the kids and parents that there will be a cut off or reduction in the monetary value of the gift

No, we stopped buying anything for nephews and neices when they hit 21, most were working by then anyway.

HEDGEHOGS this is it. When they get older they have their own money to buy whatever they like. I think I’m going to pre warn them all there will be a cut off or a reduction in the monetary value of gifts

Yes definitely. In fact no one but kids and grandkids get a present from me once they are over 18, but never had as many nieces/nephews as you. My brother's kids barely acknowledged my existence but I always sent money/vouchers so they were not treated differently to the others who always said thank you. I felt so resentful it was as if I had posted the money down a drain. I didn't see them much but when I did they would mumble an answer if I tried to talk to them. I was further incensed when my brother complained to my sister that I no longer gave his kids gifts. Her reply? Well maybe you should have taught them some manners and to say thank you.

Lynibis wow. That is shocking. It doesn’t take much to show a little gratitude. I’m sorry they didn’t acknowledge your kindness

Lynibis ...That's absolutely disgusting, time your brother & his family learnt some respect..

Manners cost nothing!

When our only child was young she used to write down all her presents & who they were from as she opened them & that way she knew who to thank & what she was thanking them for.

I stopped getting presents from my Aunties and Uncles when I was 12 years old. I got a gift from them when I got married. We always got small gifts, which I always appreciated but even those added up.
