Strange Morrisons Situation

Ask a Question

My mother's had two orders now using a voucher where they sent her the voucher by email. She uses the voucher and then they remove it at the time of delivery but the credit card company refusees the transaction because Morrisons pre-authorised at around £45 and they tried to charge over £60 which means the credit card company cancels it. It's deeply dishonest of Morrisons to just remove the voucher for no reason and they should have simply cancelled the order if they are not honouring the transaction as it was only approved at a much lower rate.

This could well be an issue with the Morrisons store at Yeovil as it doesn't seem to effect every area. Have you had a Morrisons order where they just deleted the voucher even though they actually sent it to you by email in the first place?

She has now offered to pay the true value of the order instore by cash as she has no trust for Morrisons at all. She will not give them new payment details which they are requesting.

Last time this happened we went through the Resolver process but Morrisons just ended up ignoring it. So that is two orders now she hasn't had to pay for but what are the repurcussions of this.

I can't get my head around the deep dishonestly of the Morrisons store or the sheer financial cost to them if they are doing this repeatedly.

I like Morrisons, the instore staff are friendly and like many of their products but management seem dishonest and incompetent at least at my local store.

Such a strange situation I think. If you aren't honouring the transaction surely you just cancel it. I live close to my mother just a five minute walk so tend to deal with these type of issues as she is elderly and with pre-dementia. So her memory is a little weak and she can get a little confused at times. Mostly she is very sharp but she doesn't like dealing with these sort of situations.

Did Morrisons deliver her shopping? Hope they did rather than leaving her without. They should have contacted her if there’s a payment problem.

Pjran She would have preferred them not to have delivered if they aren't honouring the voucher that they sent. Same as me if I order something using a voucher I don't expect the product to turn up at full price without the voucher applied. I never authorised that transaction.

BonzoBanana I would ring their head office and ask for an explanation.

Yeah I know that the lot of credit cards have been declined and with the vouchers this is why I don't have a credit card

CallumFlowers The credit card company was great, the sale was pre-authorised at about £45 and then Morrisons tried to take £62 but the credit card company prevented this illegal transaction which wasn't authorised. They were brilliant. There are no issues with the credit card company at all. It is Morrisons that tried to take a higher payment that wasn't authorised.

CallumFlowers I think Morrisons do a sort of pre-authorisation of the order which if the order is £45 they might pre-authorise £50 and then the final payment is less than this. However because Morrisons tried to take £62 when only about £45 was pre-authorised the credit card company stopped it because that is a lot more than authorised. It's likely some credit card companies would allow this possibly but they shouldn't. It's really simple though if Morrisons are refusing the use of the voucher they actually sent themselves via email then they should have stopped the order completely. No one is going to be happy paying an extra £20.

I think the takeaway for me is Morrisons online shopping service is dishonest and criminal in its behaviour so best to keep to instore shopping which they are excellent for. Reminds me of Tesco bank which are a vile company who I would never use nowadays. However Tesco online and instore grocery shopping is very good with very good customer service but Tesco bank are awful. Maybe Morrisons online is setup as a different department with different management who have very low standards of honesty and do not take responsiblity for their own mistakes.

Pjran They are also great for dealing with disputes. You just go online and click on the item in your current statement and choose a few options. I have to be wary using my Halifax credit card as their customer service is pretty terrible and they make it difficult to do disputes. I use my Pulse card much more which has 0.25% cashback and decent customer service. My mother has a Aqua card which is basically the same company as Pulse I think. Annoyingly she gets 0.5% cashback twice what I get.

I have used my old Morrisons card to get 100 points off selected goods and it doesn't work. I filled in an online form for a new loyalty card three weeks ago. I am awaiting it. I don't think I will bother to shop at Morrisons anymore. I stopped going when they abolished the Fiver voucher three years ago.

jam45 I went to Morrison three weeks ago and I think the store has gone downhill. It just looked scruffy inside and I think the staff have given up. I haven’t tried home shopping with any supermarkets but my neighbors do. One has a big Tesco delivery, another has Sainsbury’s and next door has Asda.

jam45 If you mean the 5000 points equals a fiver promotion that is now back on. The Morrisons bonus card scheme was reinstated a while back. I guess they linked it to the drop in customers and thought they better bring it back. It should be stated Morrisons are now saddled with huge debts due to a leveraged buyout so Morrisons have become much more vulnerable now. Their share of the market has fallen. I still think its a great instore experience but as you can imagine due to my mother's experience with online orders I feel the online side of the business is not professional or fair.

I recently had a meal in Morrison's cafe which was a £10 for two main meals and a drink each. So had half a chicken and chips with coleslaw and it was very nicely done. There was also a bonus 600 points for every £6 spent in the cafe (60p) and they paid that twice strangely as it was paid on the value before discounted. So that was £1.20 in points or £8.80 for two meals and drinks. The drinks we went for was a pot of tea each and you could refill with hot water if you wanted to so I got about 3 cups of tea out of my pot. Absolutely brilliant value. Afterwards did a main Morrisons shop with some good offers and short life reductions. It was cracking value all round.

Sugarbabe I've used all three of those and generally all are great however I can never use them for fresh fruit and veg as don't like what they select. My mother had a Asda shop where the melon she ordered was so rotten she put her hand through it by mistake as it had no strength. I just don't like the fruit and veg they select so generally limit those sort of items on an online shop to more uniform purchases like a 6 pack of apples pre-packed.
