Strawberries in Glass Jars

Other

I just read on a shared social media that if you put unwashed strawberries in a jar they can last 3 weeks or even longer. Some people commented that you can do the same with some other berries like blueberries.

Wow I had no idea about this 😍 does anyone ever do this ?

Not ever heard of this either but will definitely be looking into it cause I’m always letting strawberries and blueberries go bad

That is a great tip if it works as the strawberries we usually buy in the supermarket start to turn the following day usually even if refrigerated.

It seems legit N, there are a few articles suggesting this , heres one

How do you make strawberries last longer in a jar?

Just keep it in an airtight jar in your fridge. "If you put your fruit, like strawberries, in a glass jar in the refrigerator, they stay fresh for 2 to 3 weeks!" This method of storing food is actually pretty popular amongst the zero-waste community.Dec 28, 2021

But i think you need to wash them , just found this

Do you wash fruit before storing in mason jars?

If the fruit isn't washed before storing it in a mason jar, the bacteria will spread, and the fruit won't last very long. To avoid having fresh fruit go bad inside a mason jar, it's essential to wash and dry it properly before storage.Mar 28, 2023

This is so gross to even think about. Just buy Asda Essential Strawberries for £1.19 (mine has use by - usually within 4 days of buying).

jam45 What makes it gross, if the jar is clean then it's not really any different than them being in the plastic container and if it does increase their shelf life then it makes sense.

jms19 I really don't understand why anyone wants to keep strawberries for ages. What's wrong with buying it and eating it immediately?

Wow I’ve never heard of this. Last week I had a punnet of strawberries and put them in the fridge for one night. Opened them the next day and they had mould forming so I will definitely tray this. Thank you.

I've heard this with many fruit and vegetables but you are suppose to wash and then completely dry them I believe.

I've also heard putting them in vinegar makes them last even longer (I guess like pickled onions, beetroot and pickled eggs etc.) then you rinse the fruit well and supposedly don't taste of vinegar at all. I'm sceptical that it won't taste like vinegar and that it would still be as nutritional, but worth trying with a small amount first.

I got bags from Lakeland that do the same thing. They’re a green coloured bag and you can use them for berries but also lettuce etc which goes off quickly too. I’ve bought large punnet of fresh strawberries and put half in Lakeland bag and other half loose in same place in fridge. Within day or 2 the loose 1s are on the turn and going mushy while the 1s in Lakeland bag are still as fresh wk later. Not sure how much longer they would last but of course someone had to eat them. Strawberries never last much longer than day or 2 in my house but at least I know they’ll still be fresh if they aren’t eaten for a while

I do this with my strawberries. Soak them in a mix of vinegar and water and then rinse and completely dry them. I store with some kitchen paper to absorb any extra water.
