Would You Support a 4 Day Working Week?

Yes - as long as this actually means working less hours versus cramming a 5-7 day work week into 4 days

Same wages and workload for 4 days instead of 5 then yes 100%

Same wages but over 4 days hell yeah. Won't work in education or childcare sectors because kids won't cope learning til 4.30/5pm and nurseries will still have to be open 5 days with the same amount of staff due to ratios. Those that provide holiday clubs would have to open 5 days a week year round to provide cover for parents on the days that schools are shut if it coincidence on a day a parent works.

If it is the same amount of wages over the 4 days then yes I would support it. It wouldn't really work in certain sectors, like education, but would work well in others.

I work 4 days by voice. Not the same as I don’t get paid for 5 days but I do support the idea. I earn a little less but it hugely improved my mental health having that extra long weekend.

Its a lovely idea but who would actually benefit? as you would still have to staff hospitals, police, fire service, restaurants, shops, schools, nursery's. There aren't enough staff to run the NHS already without removing hours.

There is a huge issue with the UK economy not being productive enough which is basically down to costs being too high. We need to export a lot more and import far less and I don't see how this can be achieved by giving ourselves effectively a huge pay increase per hour even if less hours are worked. I think people find their own work rate which is comfortable for them. To suddenly expect them to be 25% more productive is quite ridiculous and in many situations they are in situations where the work rate is dictated by the situation not what they do themselves. I.e. shop work, driving, automated factories etc.

I would love a 4 day work week but I wonder what it would do to small businesses.

My son was offered a 4 days on 4 off job .but it would have taken him an hour to get there and an hour to get home .he was expected to work 12 hour shifts too .would need 4 days off to recover !!!

SamGoodship - Unworkable for most jobs. Only a council would even consider such an unacceptable practice. If you phone the council in my district about gardening, fly-tipping or whatever I can bet you £1 you will not get through to any department whatsoever. The council staff are all work shy and useless.

Id happily go for 4 day week - and probably would have that option if I asked for it but will hang on for another year when I hope to reduce my hours a bit anyway. Many jobs will work well on a 4 day week although many wont. jam45 - many companies offer this - not just councils. At the end of the day if it works for the job then why not offer it. Giving staff options to choose all helps with staff retention - many employers are struggling to find staff at all at the moment so anything that helps is a good thing

I work 4 days it use to be an early finish on a Friday but they done away with the Friday gave us shorter lunch break we only get 15 minutes so we cam get the Friday off and finish a bit later during the week its 4 long days 7.30 until 5.15 but its definitely worth it getting a fri off

It depends, do you get the same £, a lot of employers can't afford wage increases, so having a 4 day work will make a better life work balance and may be an acceptable way to attract/retain workers.

I have worked in Education for 23 years. All those saying it wouldn't work in Education are wrong!

It could definitely work; children are entitled to 25hrs per week of Education and this is certainly possible to achieve over 4 days = 6hrs 15 mins a day. The benefits to both Students and Staff would be huge.

Schools budgets have taken a severe beating over the past 10 plus years. The operational savings alone would free up more from their overstretched coffers!

It would give full-time workers the opportunity to get more done at home and to actually relax with more quality time to spend with family and friends.

Yes my husband did a four day week for years, still a 37 hour week.

I already work a four NIGHT working week. Thats enough for me. Been doing four nights In different jobs for a few years now. Its more than enough. As long as you can pay your bills and have a little spending money thats all that matters.

I think in the UK we are too work centric, a 3 day weekend would be good so everyone can chill out a bit and enjoy some relaxation time. Don’t see it happening on a massive scale anytime soon though
