Toothache Remedy Tips
Ask a Question
Everyone at some point suffers with toothache unless you are very very lucky. I have always taken care of my teeth and visited the dentist every 6 months as recommended however when covid hit and everything closed I was unable to see my dentist for almost 2 years and I had some cavities and had broken and chipped a few teeth. Aside from pain killers what toothache remedies do you use that actually work?
So far I have tried the following:
Ice
Orajel
Dentigen
Bonjela
Ambesol
Chloraseptic spray
Clove oil
Garlic
Dentist always recommend anti inflammatory tablets but I am highly allergic to them and let’s be honest paracetamol doesn’t even touch it so I’m really interested to hear some real remedies that work (if any exist) so I can be prepared for the next toothache.
Its not a natural remedy but I would recommend Corsodyl Antibacterial Mouthwash, I use this and it does help with any mouth infection and I don't know if it's psychosomatic but gargling with this always seems to help my toothache plus I use a Sensodyne toothpaste
beccatavender Hey, thanks for your helpful comment. We've emailed you a £1 Costa coupon to say thank you! It has gone to the email address on your Latest Deals account.
sophiereddy That is so kind of you, but there is no need, just hope the advice helps
Other than paracetamol not a lot really except actually visiting a dentist. The only other bit of advice is rinsing with warm salt water regularly as helps fight infection. That’s why dentists always say do this after an extraction. I have an awful lot of treatment at dentist experience. Salt water is also natural so shouldn’t be allergic hopefully.
About 2 months ago I bought some Cadbury's Eclairs toffees off Amazon when they were doing them for a pound. Anyway while scoffing them being a thick toffee type consistency I managed to pull up one of my rear teeth slightly to give myself toothache. Really annoying. Anyway as you do I made sure I was using anti-bacterial mouthwash and regularly cleaning my teeth. I decided to get myself into an inflammatory state in order to kickstart my immune system. I choose to go out in the cold slightly under-dressed in the hope of picking up a minor virus or something. I wanted my immune system to fix my toothache problem and repair the nerves in my tooth. Anyway I reckon it took about 5 weeks to go back from a wobbly tooth with toothache to a solid rooted tooth again. I can put full pressure on it now with no issues at all.
I don't understand why a dentist would recommend an anti-inflammatory surely the whole point of inflammation is to repair issues in the body. If you use an anti-inflammatory the tooth would likely need removal after a while because the nerves/gums wouldn't be repaired and more infection would set in. I realise sometimes the body goes into an inflammatory state incorrectly like hay fever etc and an anti-inflammatory makes sense but you want to be careful using an anti-inflammatory when the body has things to repair or viruses and bacteria to remove. Teeth nerves and gums are one of those things difficult for the body to repair. Many people with weaker immune systems would likely struggle to repair gums and nerves of the mouth anyway.
Have you tried just putting the paracetamol just on the effective area and let it desolve on its own always worked for me till I can get sorted with dentist
I've personally found Clove oil (Eugenol oil) to be out of this world in terms of helping with pain. But you must dilute it as it is very strong. Essential oils are great because some have both antifungal and antibacterial properties which will help destroy those germs beneath the gum line. Clove oil is great because it fights oral bacteria.
Nadiaparveen I used it once didn't know you had to dilute it omg it was nasty and that was at least 7 years ago I've never had toothache again in that tooth
Warm water add 1/2 teaspoon of tumeric to 1/2 pint of warm water . A teaspoon of lemon juice stir well and gargle ner th toothache
Ashton and Parsons teething granules for children sometimes help if paracetamol and other painkillers are not working or corsodyl mouthwash/ or the alternative cheaper one by wisdom as they both do the same thing and are same product but different packaging. I know this as work in a pharmacy.
God I hate toothache. £20K for a full mouth of implants almost seems worth it to never experience toothache again. There's really absolutely nothing you can do about the pain. Painkillers don't touch it. Even localised anaesthetic won't help unless it's injected. Get to the dentist ASAP, because these things snowball fast. I would also recommend against using ice, the swift drop in temperature will probably make it worse.
You have my sympathy, toothache is the worst kind of ache
Clove oil does work, but it's absolutely disgusting! For the same effect try getting some actual cloves, hold one in your mouth until it starts softening, then hold it by the aching tooth so the "juice" goes all round your tooth and into any cracks, that should numb the tooth a lot so if possible you can chew it very gently without hurting your tooth more.
Years of experience of dental problems because my teeth didn't form properly before I was born (and yes, I'm a regular visitor to the dentist, eek)...so I'm very interested to read everybody else's suggestions too.
