Turning off the Heating in School.....

Ask a Question

Is it wrong to turn off the heating in schools to teach kids about climate change?

A secondary school’s “Blue Nose Day” plan to do just that was cancelled due to concerns. Would this have gone too far, or is it a valuable lesson? 👇

Too far imo, sure there’s plenty of other ways to show or teach them about it without having to turn off the heating at school

I don’t think it would be fair to turn it off and have the children trying to learn cold. You wouldn’t want to sit in an office freezing, so school shouldn’t be any different

Honestly if school said they were turning heating off due to this climate nonsense, then my kids wouldn't be going to school until it's turned back on

There are plenty of other ways to teach about climate change. I remember working in a classroom where the heating wasn't working. The pupils and I were sat there in jackets, scarves, hats and gloves. It was horrible. Pupils were only in there for a lesson at a time, I was there all day and it was horrific. No way I would voluntarily put pupils through that.

Would be ok maybe for morning assembly just to illustrate what it’s like but all day is not conducive to learning.

Don't they normally shut the schools if there is no heating? Well that's what they do near us I would be fuming being honest I wouldn't let my child go in school they day they would be doing it

Bad enough when I joined my friend. her son & friend's Mum at Mass 2 Sundays ago after walking home from my long shift which included overnight..

I was absolutely FREEZING, had a good quality M & S thermal top on. T shirt. Hoodie & coat on, friend's mum had almost the same & was FREEZING as the usual Priest was in India & the other members of his flock didn't know how to put the heating on so I was told by my friend after the service!

Even the Deacon said next Sunday we hope to have the heating back on!!

No there are better ways than to teach Climate Change...

My school is freezing 🥶 and that's with the heating on. In the summer it's too hot. It's a glass building

I thought schools had to be a certain temperature?

Surely they should be turning it up to demonstrate climate change, overall temperatures are rising and sea levels are rising. If you want to demonstrate climate change turn up the temperature or stick in a swimming pool to have their lesson.

No doubt this idea was thought up by someone who has never sat in a cold classroom it was horrible. My primary school had temporary classroom and it wasn’t very pleasant. I don’t see how switching it off for the odd day is going to achieve anything as echoed by a few comments in the chat already.

I was taught at school about recycling and I still recycle everything I can.

I do think the younger the better for teaching kids about helping the planet but don’t think this is the way to go at all.

Wouldn't do them any harm, as the way things are going we won't have any money to turn the heating on at home. It would educate them to realise that nothing is for free. The shape of things to come in our beautiful cold country.

Awareness is good but the teachers do actually need to teach the kids about such practices for more than one day
