UK Prisoners Could Serve Their Time in Estonia

In the News

There are so many prisoners in UK jails at the moment there are only 80 or so spare places left

This is why convicted criminals are getting lighter sentences than they should that don't involve jail

In fact the government are releasing more criminals earlier than they should because of overcrowding, which is a danger to the public

Sending prisoners to Rwanda failed, now the government is considering sending them to Estonia

It seems initially to make sense , as keeping a prisoner in jail there costs only £10,000 each PA , at the moment, compared up to £100,000 each elsewhere , it's somewhere in between in the UK

But it isn't just the initial cost the Uk need to pay estonia per prisoner, there's the cost of sending UK prison guards to work over there , then there's the cost of flights , not only for the prisoners, but for relatives to visit them in jail, yes, they would be able to claim this cost back from the taxpayers !!

I am sure there are other expenses also not mentioned in the article, so eventually the overall expenses would probably be the same or more than keeping them in the UK

Any politician considering this should be instantly sacked as completely incompetent, It takes huge amounts of money out of the UK economy, leads to more debt and more borrowing etc. We need to stop giving away money and return to a trading surplus. Sending 10s of millions of pounds abroad possibly 100s of millions is just madness and shows the utter incompetence of any person considering it.

BonzoBanana I don't know if you saw on the news the other day B , it showed prisoners being released early , some two thirds through their sentences , and they were outside the jail celebrating with bottles of champagne

The tv interviewed one father of a prisoner being picked up and he said his son would probably go back to drug dealing if his benefits were not enough

This is what we are up against

telmel Clearly his son doesn't fear prison or the so called punishment of it. Seems a completely reasonable comment based on the circumstances. Many countries exploit prisoners as cheap labour and we need to do that so these vile people actually become a resource and work hard for no money just basic food and lodgings. Of course such countries would also beat such prisoners if they become out of line and simply shot them all if there was a mass riot which again leads to a solution in itself. Also high levels of discipline and control protects the less violent prisoners although I've always believed non violent criminals should not be mixed with violent criminals there should be two types of prisons and those who are non-violent and can be safely released and reformed should be treated a lot better. A shoplifter just secretly stealing products should not be compared to a shoplifter who puts a knife to the throat of a sales assistant demanding all cash and cigarettes etc. To me those criminals are poles apart.

telmel That's exactly what will happen as well. There not afraid of going inside. My OH bumped into someone he knew from school a while back, Turned out he'd just been released from prison. Then proceeds to tell him how he'll be going back soon because he WANTS to. My OH was like eh? He says all my mates are in there. No one should WANT to go to prison. It's meant to be a punishment.

Glitterandgold I can well believe it G, i have often said this, prison is too cushy, for some, you just sit on your backside all day if you want and get fed and keep warm , use the facilities and games rooms etc in exchange for your freedom , some don't want the freedom when it involves working, feeding yourself and having to pay bills and rent

Surely it would have been more cost effective to refurb some of the prisons that were closed down, or even build one or two new ones?

Leannexxx Unfortunately that will never happen L

This country has gone too soft with human rights and vulture lawyers sucking taxpayers dry when a prisoner feels they have been hard done by

As i mentioned before , what a kick in the teeth for the authorities when the prisoners are gulping down champagne to celebrate getting out early , how can they even afford to do that, if not through the proceeds of crime !!

Also did you know the government are putting the criminals that are released early up in hotels with all meals included until they sort out accommodation for them !!

While pensioners lose their winter fuel allowance, absolutely disgusting !!

Something needs doing. Letting them out early isn't ok. Especially when you see them celebrating

A case from Newcastle Crown Court. An Albanian national who farmed cannabis plants worth up to £105,000 out of "honour" to repay a debt has been jailed for 20 months. He will be automatically returned to Albania upon his release from prison. Why not send him straight back to Albania and save the cost of putting him in prison here, give his place to someone else.

lilyflower I think if they send him back he would go free , i don't think the sentence would be valid back there

So the taxpayers have to foot the bill yet again

telmel I did a little digging and foreign prisoners have to finish their sentence in home country but an interesting page was this agreement between UK and Albania Hundreds of Albanian prisoners to be returned to their home country in exchange for UK support to help modernise the Albanian prison systemhttps://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-and-albania-agree-groundbreaking-new-arrangement-on-prisoner-transfers

lilyflower Its funny isn't it L, the scum of other countries squirm their way into the UK , mainly the criminals, then when you try to send them back after they have embezzled thousands , the UK are bribed into giving them money to upgrade their failing jails etc

We have enough problems here with our own without having to support other economies, they should just be flown back and dropped off on their doorstep, then the UK should make a compensation claim against that country for out of pocket expenses incurred from prosecution costs , would that ever happen, i doubt it

This seems like a crazy solution to a crazy problem.. why do we have so many criminals? I don't know much about the prison system but I think we should actually try to rehabilitate these people as Im sure most arent first time offenders

Never going to happen, simply because it against their human rights, every prisoner is entitled to a visit, that wouldn't happen if they were sent to Estonia
