Unlocking a Supermarket Trolley without a Coin

Other

I am not a fan of silly or dangerous hacks, the sort you get on TikTok , but this one is quite useful

How many times have you gone to get a supermarket trolley only to realise you don't have a pound coin?

You then have to ask at customer service or a free till for some change

Then i spotted an article about using a household key to unlock the trolley by inserting it into the coin slot

The article claims you use the key end to do this, but others say to use the round end that is the same shape as a coin

I searched and found a video showing the hack and have posted it below

Please let me know if it works for anyone ?

Happy shopping !

Trolleys around here need the coin to be inserted into the top, you can't slide them in from the side?! Perhaps I should break my front door key in half? 😆😆

I'd be scared my key would get stuck lol. It has happened to me a few times when I have arrived at the store with no £1. My store won't give change.

Lynibis I would just use an old key that you don't use anymore L, i think there is enough flexibility in the slot for either the round bit or the key end , the others that close sideways might be more difficult to use though

It's just something to keep in your bag for emergencies really when you don't have a coin handy

Ah yes, i have something similar, but just a plain disc, it only works in certain supermarket trolleys though

It doesn't work with Aldi shopping trollies. I have seen abandon trollies in the car park and the trolly bay with the door key intact.

jam45 You will just have to pay up at Aldi J , and i wonder what will happen when we all go cashless , you won't see trolleys anymore unless they convert the slots to take credit cards 🤔

I asked the security guard at a Sainsbury's if they offer plastic coins for the shopping carts, eh no, just use coins.

PhilipMarc I think they expect you will return the trolley if you have a pound coin in it P , and it won't end up in the canal like some do , but i bet some people don't care and wheel them home , they think it worth the pound

Surely with the way things are going the £1 to borrow a trolleys days are numbered. It is frustrating wanting to do a shop but having no money or change.

I think the supermarkets will carry on with the practice J until we go cashless, they see it as a deterrent to people walking off with them

I do understand why , when a replacement can cost them upwards of £250 for the smaller and i am sure i read somewhere up to £500 for the largest

I wouldn’t want to use my front door key in case someone steels the trolley.

That's why i suggested using an old key P , you can keep it in a purse , wallet , on a key ring or in the car
