Do You Walk Your Kids to School??

Ask a Question

Some of the local schools are trying to encourage more parents to walk their kids to school (those that live within a 10 min walk), to reduce their carbon footprint and help children get more exercise.

When I was young, my parents had a car - but theres no way they would have drove to school as it was only a 5 minute walk…

Do you think people are lazier now (obviously doesn’t apply to those with medical issues and/or disabilities)

I always walked my children to Primary school and then they all walked to secondary school apart from our son who went to a grammar school which was a bus ride away. I think the problem is more parents work so they drop and pick up their children on way to school and back from work.

eyeballkerry a very good point. Especially if it’s raining. No-one wants to go to work wet or have little ones sitting in school all day with wet feet

I don’t I’m afraid, we live out of the village about 5/6 miles away. Wish I could

possy oh wow. That’s quite a bit out. You would be absolutely knackered walking that twice a day lol

PayItForward really would, there and back so 4 times a day. Wouldn’t have time for it. My son says sometimes I wish we lived in the village but I think that’s because of the park haha

It’s good to encourage the children to exercise but some mums need to get to work so don’t have the time.

Yes they are lazy, as a kid I walked to school everyday by myself ,I wouldn't have dared asked my dad for a lift , our kids the same they walk unless the weather is really bad then I'll drop them off

Local primary school is about 7-8 mins walk from my house, yet my neighbour everyday take their child in the car. Don't really understand it as it's chaos with cars outside the school each day so would realistically be easier to walk.

Mango4 yes. I see cars parked everywhere near schools. Double yellow lines, on the footpath - you name it. It’s bedlam

Jackscot that’s great. It all counts towards his steps everyday. I just to enjoy the walk to school as I’d meet my friends to walk in

I usually drive him down as I have to go to work afterwards would be late if I walked him there and then back again to get the car. If I am off work then I will walk him down. I always walk to pick him up though.

MrsCraig thats understandable. Some schools where I live do a breakfast club. children can go into school at 8am and get their breakfast for a small price (between 50p-£1). maybe if more schools did this it would help with congestion as there wouldn’t be the same amount of cars dropping off at the same time

PayItForward our sons school doesn't do anything like that. Plus childcare options are limited so can't even drop him somewhere else for them to take him to school. I always go down a bit earlier to avoid the traffic outside the school.

I always used to walk my little brother to school when he was young. He’s 17 now but soon as he started high school he walked himself

LL81 yeah. I find it odd that people living next to each other, going to drop off at the same school don’t car pool if they aren’t walking

When mine were in primary I didn't only because I worked there and had to be there for 7.30 and was working strange hours like working breakfast club then back for an hour mid morning and then again at 12 for an hour and some days I'd leave and come back for the last hour of the day. Joys of zero hour jobs

If I could have walked I would have but with working odd hours and at one point I had 4 jobs all zero hours it was too tricky. At one point I was working in the kids school, then a local secondary for lunchtime duty then after school club and a youth club before doing yhe hours I posted before. Often in my current school parents aren't in catchment but send kids to the school because of childcare reasons. As in their sister will pick the kids up from school so having all the cousins in one school is easier.

Yes we always walk to breakfast club , then I cycle to work. We try and be as green as we can be and it sets us up for the day.
