Now They Want to Stop Us Using 'Pet' as an Endearment

In the News

So are they going to stop all terms of endearment now? The excuse is 'it's sexist'. Really? I have heard many women AND men using PET when speaking to women and men so how is it sexist. I am getting so sick of the speech police telling us what we can or can't say.

As an older woman i often call younger people darling. I think it puts forth a warmth and I know I get a nice vibe when people call me by an endearment, though I don't like dear for some reason, but still wouldn't object.

I remember when I was younger my next door neighbour called me Poppet. I loved it when he called me that. My mother in law calls people love all the time. My auntie has called me Pet since I was little. I like it when people use terms of endearment.

MrsCraig I think you can tell from demeanour and body language if people don't like being called a pet name and hopefully we would realise and not do it. Personally I like the Scottish 'hen', surprised you didn't mention that 😄

Lynibis yes my Auntie uses that one all the time too. Whenever you are in a shop she always says "thanks hen" to the staff, even if they are male. She does it with bus drivers too.

Leannexxx I think we are rapidly going to a place of 'free speech, CANCELLED '. It isn't always easy to remember what you can and can't say.

In general i don’t think 99% of people really care. No sane person would be offended by being called pet etc

jms19 you're right, I have nothing but disdain for people who want to police our speech, and for those who complain about certain words we use.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I'm living in the north east so lots of people say Pet. My mum calls me poppet. Just been nice.

I don't like sweetie but if people address me with good intent I am just pleased that they do.Kindness should be encouraged not made punishable.

MelissaLee1 I don't use the word Sweetie but if I did it seems more appropriate toward children not adults, but like you I wouldn't take offence if it was well meaning.

I have not issues with people using these terms. I believe sometimes they do it because they have forgotten my name. Our local manager in the pub calls everyone ‘My lovely’. I’m always waiting for her to read my fortune.

eyeballkerry my neighbour can only be in her early thirties and I think everyone knows how old I am. But bless her heart she calls me hun, honey, sweetie, my lovely, but it does feel the wrong way round lol.

Lynibis I could put up with most of them, don’t particularly like it but I can not stand babe or you guys if there is a group.

eyeballkerry must admit I use guys in certain situations e.g when all the family are round for dinner I might say 'do all you guys want brussel sprouts' or that sort of thing. Don't like babe at all but not likely to be used when speaking to me😂

Here in Yorkshire we use Flower or luv to address a women, most love it, especially the older women when you call them flower, But I have found in the last couple of years that a minority don't like it

Saw this on our local news. It's just stupid. Apparently it's been deemed 'patronising' yet the reported even remarked they couldn't find a single person on the high street who was offended. Who comes up with this nonsense then? I'm a geordie so pet is instilled into our vocabulary. It's a term of endearment. I wouldn't call anyone I disliked pet. It'd also extremely useful when you forget someone's name

Glitterandgold just so. Who do these people think they are trying to ban words that are not offensive from our local dialects.

I've been without home internet for several days now due to an external issue, so I only use my mobile data for essential stuff.

Still, I've decided to browse here and they want what? I don't care what they want. England and America have one thing in common lately... Both dysfunctional and broken, but a lot of Western countries are like this, sadly.

They can tell me what they want when they make England safe, clean, and prosperous again... I'll wait. Oh god, the Notting Hill Zombiefest is starting soon... 😑
