Warning Issued for Everyone to Keep Windows Shut 'At All Times' for next 4 Weeks

In the News

You might think the 'keep the windows shut' warning was because of the heat, or dust in the atmosphere , but it is for a more 'creepy' reason

It is spider season , and the male spiders come into our homes looking for a female mate

Why they assume the females will be in the house is another question, maybe they assume they are the homemakers ?

Anyway, you need to keep on the lookout for those webs, no , not the www web but the one that's spun to snare the female

Darkness is the worst as they are night creatures , but there is an upside

They will munch on any other scurrying insects in the house like woodlice or flies

So try not to kill them , they are just doing what spiders do

Not keen on spiders or flies but at least with spiders they are easy to deal with and chuck out. Flies are the most annoying creatures for getting rid off. Annoying too having to run around the room like a madman with a book in my hand trying to kill the little gits. I try to tune them out of my thoughts and hope they will go away but that doesn't last long before I'm really annoyed with them and get determined to kill them. I don't typically kill spiders though just capture them and put them outside.

BonzoBanana I agree with you regarding flies B

And why is it they seem to know you are about to swat them a split second before they make their escape , then continue pestering you for the rest of the day as if mocking you ?

telmel Flies are too fast, super fast reaction times. You spend a minute trying to swot them and fail only to sit down and found it resting on your hand shortly afterwards. So irritating.

BonzoBanana is it me but fly spraying no longer works now , a few years ago we had flying ants in the window used a black can of fly spray in the window and forgot about a plant but as soon as the mist hit the plant and flies they all went limp in the window cill, this new eco friendly stuff you may as well just chuck the can at them for a better result!

I have to have at least one incy in the place to take care of any flies. Not sure what's worse spider bites or flies landing on yer arm.Front room is near the garden so they wander in.A fox did once as well!

I get big black hairy ones 🕷 in my house and they run really fast. I jump out of my skin every time I see one. I once woke up and it was on my bedside table and it was really close to my eye. That’s the nearest I ever got to flying as a human right across the other side of the room screaming at my husband 🤣. He doesn’t like them either but he does remove them for me. Another time I was home alone and a great big one was still on my light cream patio door drawn curtain and it stood out so much. I wanted to go in the garden but husband wasn’t home. Took all my bravery to open door and bash and shake curtain with a pole until it fell off and ran outside. Nearly had heart attack both times. I won’t close windows if it’s hot though and need air. I have to take the risk but get cups at the ready to catch them.

Spiders are great for getting rid of things like flies.

Though I read there's spiders as big as rats in the uk at the moment. Eeek

My daughter was cleaning the gutters the other day, her choice while we were out and we live in a bungalow plus she is 23 before I’m done for child labour. Anyway back to the point, she came across two very large bodied spiders. She then told us to keep the windows shut after that day.

I am terrified of spiders. At 56 i will cry if i see a big spider. I like having a couple of flies divebombing me as i am a bit more assured there are no spiders. I got bit by one of those fake or false widows a few years ago and ended up in hospital - having to have surgery to remove necrotic tissue. Grisly photos available if allowed!

suevernon1968 My goodness S , so sorry to hear that

I have had a bite from a spider many years ago, at least i think it was from a spider , but only left with a red welt that itched

I suppose we are all different with varied immune systems

Scared the life out of me seeing that but definitely this time of year they definitely appear. I’m not a spider person they have to go, I freeze at the sight of one.

I’ve seen some nasty looking ones in the past, but I pose more of a danger to them than they do to me. I’ve learned to appreciate them and when I find one, I just catch them and put them out

I’ve seen some rather large spiders in my garden which I really don’t want to share my home with. If they’re outdoor spiders why do they want to find an indoor mate ? I’m puzzled.

Pjran I think it is too dangerous for them to start looking and mating outside P, there are so many predators that like a nice juicy spider, whereas inside they have plenty of nooks and crannies to hide from humans , and the worse that can happen is to be stepped on, or get away with a shrieking scream 😀
