WARNING - NECTAR Being Hit by Massive Fraud AGAIN!!!!
News
I just had 50,000 points stolen and I am very careful with my online presence and details - Apparently they are cloning your card at the till in Sainsburys.
I have been in touch with Nectar and they are aware of the situation and the Police are involved (YET AGAIN)!
Nectar card security is terrible and has been for years so they have themselves to blame but its you who will suffer the consequences.
Thankfully Nectar are no longer quibbling and will set you up a new account and send you a new card and give you 2000 free Nectar points for your trouble!
Also be aware of fraud if you have linked you Nectar card with Ebay - they have even found a way to defraud your Nectar points on Ebay!
Apparently the fraudsters have now found a way to clone your Nectar car and are using staff in Sainsburys so watch your card and dont let it out of your sight when you are at Sainsburys.
To be honest they can actually steal your points without any access to your card, account or skimming and its easy to do - I could do it now within 10 minutes. What they do is generate random 14 digit codes then plonk them into the Nectar app and try and login - Instead of Nectar security checking and allowing to enter a password it doesn't if the 14 digit code doesn't exist - as soon as they get a logon password - then its as simply as taking that number and using an online barcode generator - sticking it into Stocard app or printing it out and sticking it onto any old nectar card then they just wave it at the barcode scanner in Sainsbury or Argos etc to test it - then they empty your account - Nectar have known about this for at least 3 years but they haven't bothered to update their security at all - Utterly Disgraceful!
There have been multiple cases of fraud within Sainsburys itself with an IT Manager being sent to prison.
I have heard they have actually cracked the Nectar barcode so dont even need your card now - whether this is true is not entirely apparent as Nectar are saying nothing but if it is its a major disaster for Nectar!
A massive list of usernames and passwords is also being used so check your Nectar account - the first thing they will do is change your security details and then have a card sent to their mule addresses.
Go to this website and check your email address - It will tell you if you have been hacked so change your password immediately!
The first pointer to fraud is that they will attempt £1 transactions so you will see multiple 1 point additions to your account on the same day - this is them setting up payments at each of the Sainsburys or Argos they intend to defraud you at the next day!
In my case they were all on the same road in Leicester:-
Fosse Park
Wigston
Glen Road
Leicester North
Loughborough
Loughborough Cafe
Canley
I have already informed Nectar how easy it would be to catch these Mules as all they need to do is Tally the useage time of my Nectar card with CCTV time at these stores - Particularly the Loughborough Cafe!!! But they dont seem to want any help!!!
CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD ON THE NECTAR SITE IMMEDIATELY WOULD BE MY RECOMMENDATION!!!
They have also compromised Tesco Clubcard previously.
So its not just your bank card they are now targetting they will try and get your money from any avenue such is their modus operandi!
Be careful out there folks its a Jungle and TRUST-NO1.
I cant access my nectar account on my app it was ok yesterday but now it's not working.
When I scan my card to log back in it says cannot recognise card details what do I do
Phone Nectar helpline (0344 811 0811) - they have hacked your account , changed your password and probably your address and other details so the Nectar team will probably use your original details if you tell them you think the account has been changed and hacked!
Still happening! just lost 15000 points, reasonably helpful on the 0344 number above. Saw a spurious £1 debit from sainsbury's thursday. got a verification code email early Friday (6:15am) changed password immediately, well a couple of hours later, then today an 'email address change' email from Nectar, tried to login and account disabled. Spoke to Nectar team who said 2 ebay transactions had cleared out my account! Getting a new card and 2000 points as goodwill at least!
Nectar needs to get it sorted out and if they don't, they might reboot the service as a new one while old customers get transferred automatically.
Not to mention the horrendous security vulnerability in their nectar app. Try this:
Within the app, tap the little icon at the top-right (looks like a head and shoulders) which takes you to the "Your Account" menu.
Tap "Log out".
When you log back in it remembers your nectar ID, and if you tap Continue it has also remembered your PLAIN TEXT PASSWORD!!!! Seriously, you can just tap "Show" and it will show you your password!!!
I don't think Sainsbury's have any idea of what Security is.
I've just had 9000 points removed have to wait 28days for a response hopefully will be earlier as was saving points for a big Christmas food shop
Just had all my stolen as well. We are very carful with the card. Best advice is to download the nectar app and set notifications to send you a message when anything takes place. Sadly I had a new phone and did not log in and set it up for 2 weeks and this is when it happened otherwise I would have spotted it straight away. If you get a notification that you do not recognise 1) order a replacement card straight away!!! 2) change your nectar password.
I think this should make us all wary of saving up points or money on any reward cards, cashback sites etc. I always redeem mine as soon as I can. There are safer ways to save up for Christmas.
Grannyclock I agree - these are not like traditional banking savings accounts so it benefits us to redeem asap
I lost 4000 points from my nectar card, this happened on Saturday 27th march 2021, we used the card on the 25th and not until today, the 29th, did I notice the points loss, where has it gone, the web site say I redeemed the points at Sainsburys Hayes, that is near to London, I live in Shropshire, not very near. What is happening to this country?
I have just had £120 worth of Nectar points stolen from my account. A friend of mine had all of hers stolen last month. Mine were used in Finchley Road which is nowhere near me. Has anyone had there points refunded?
I am very happy with Nectar, I phoned them this morning, by which time, the person had used the card again this morning for another £120 worth of points which I didn’t have on my account. I spoke to two very helpful people and I have had all my points returned to a new account which I was able to set up over the phone. They also gave me an extra 2,000 points for the inconvenience. So if it happens to you, just ring them as soon as you can, using the number on the web site.
Wow nust came across this post today. I have a nectar account this is very scary to read. I have been saving points on it for years never actually used it though. Will have to be careful thank you
Just had £30 taken, Finchley Road, London IIRC, account has been closed, being sent a new card and points will be redeemed. Must be costing Nectar a fortune!
Had 8000 points stolen from my card today. Spent at sainsbury‘s in Slough, never been to Slough! Nectar agreed to refund them and issue a new card/account.
I'm not worried as I only have £6.50 on my Nectar card. I hope Sainsbury's refund the points to those who have had them stolen.
Thanks. I've just recently been hacked on something else. Luckily it's been refunded. These scams are happening way too often now
They have some serious problems with Nectar, it's not the first time that this has happened. Crazy!
Hi Gary,
I began searching after I discovered that £145.21 of my points have vanished in the last two days. Cannot get through to Nectar. Having read all the comments and I must admit that I’m not hopeful at getting my points back.
Trish
I would advise people to spend the points as soon as they can rather than saving them up. It has always been the case that if you lose the card someone can use it.
Thanks for bringing this problem regarding nectar points to my attention. I’ve cashed out £40 into M&S vouchers.
I had 12500 Nectar points stolen from my account on Saturday. I didn't notice until late in the evening and due to Customer Services not being available after 5pm on a Saturday I had to wait until this morning to contact them. On Saturday morning I had £63.21, but by Saturday evening I only had 71p. It showed that my points had been spent at a Sainsbury's in Sydenham. I had no idea where this was so had to Google it. Sydenham is in the London area. I live 240miles away from where my Nectar points were spent. I have no idea how someone else has been able to use my points. Nectar have deactivated my Nectar account and told me to destroy my card. They are issuing me with a new Nectar card and have told me that all my points will be transferred onto the new card along with 2000 points as a goodwill gesture. I have recently opened up a Sainsbury's Nectar Credit Card which if I spent £400 in the first 2 months I would be awarded 8000 Nectar points, which is equivalent to £40. Due to my current Nectar card being deactivated I doubt if I will see those bonus points.
Rachelly1919 the mind boggles, doesn't it? I can't comprehend how someone can use your card like this unless you accidentally lose it. It smacks of insider dealings.
If they can do this are all our other cards safe. Glad they compensated you but the 8000 is a lot to lose, hope you do get those points.
Hmm ALL these so called "loyalty cards" are simply data harvesting schemes ! Any discounts, or points collected on purchases, are illusory savings; they are only deferred payments ! Essentially YOU are Lending Sainsbury's YOUR Money, interest free, for months or even years ! As if that's not bad enough, you are risking your security, and paying to have them harvest your data. Sainsbury's simply jack up the "usual price" to be able to then offer a bogus "Nectar discount" or Nectar card points on that item. You aren't really saving any money. Most of the Nectar flagged items in Sainsbury's store can be purchased at other supermarkets where their "usual price" IS THE SAME as Sainsbury's so called Nectar discount price. Sainsbury's are Gaslighting their customers into handing over access to their purchasing and banking data, and that's a fact. Sainsbury's expect their ordinary shoppers to foot the bill for all this, by buying those artificially price inflated items, but THEY WON'T !
I spent some nectar points on argos today and had a verification code sent to my email first, which has never happened before so maybe they are starting to take it more seriously.
They can take more than your points balance my friend had double the points amount taken leaving a minus points balance be warned
Thanks for the heads up, i've heard this sort of thing happens a lot with nectar cards and doesn't seem you can do a great deal to stop it. At least they sorted a refund of your points because i'd heard others didn't get anything back
Hit yesterday. £72 available they took the lot and left me with a minus 10,598 balance, how do they spend more than you have available?
I found out today that my card has been used and 10000 points stole.
The pattern was exactly as you said with a couple of pound transactions first. This was in Croydon which is about 100 miles from where I live. I only use my card in Sainsbury’s and never hand it over but scan it myself.
very concerning.
ill be changing all my passwords on everything
Just had 3000 points stolen, Nectar no help and wouldn't put me through to security as I couldn't remember the date I registered with them, closing the card down and won't be going to Sainsbury's for a while. Transactions were just outside London, one to use the points and two adding on 1 point each.
This problem is ongoing. I just checked my balance to find 144,500 nectar points worth over £700 had been spent in one day in London which is 130 miles away from me. I don't even take my nectar card out of the house with me. Seems crazy this is possible with no text messages or notifications sent to me to let me know.
I never leave any points, I always get vouchers when I reach 500, I know a couple of people who have lost their points to hackers ect...
This happened to my daughters account recently, she got in touch with them and they have returned her points and compensated her as well. It is just annoying sorting it out.
Just had 3000 points stolen from Hackney again. Sainsbury say they will sort it. Could t get throught to action fraud they are a waste of time
Poor old Sainsburys, first their computers were hacked and now this. Mind you after witnessing their letting go of a number of disabled employees locally a few years ago I am starting to think Karma may be catching up with them.
Does anyone know how long is it taking for Nectar to issue replacement cards these days? Mine were stolen while I was on a flight so I’ve sent them the evidence but the “case is still live while they wait for confirmation“ (from Argos was the implication) is all I’m being told, and thanks for my patience etc… it’s been nine weeks since I reported it to them!
11,500 posts I have had stolen. It happened on the 29th of July but I only noticed today. Spent ages trying to sort it out and it's still not sorted. I can't remember my safe word. They hint that its my mothers maiden name but when I give that to them they say that it's not correct. My landline phone number, which has been the same for 40 plus years, is also apparently not correct.
The points were redeemed in a petrol station in Enfield and Whitechapel. I live in Scotland. Looking online I have found other cases where points have been used in a petrol station in Enfield. Why is this not being investigated?
Had my account emptied recently too. I can see the laughable lack of security or even basic checks when spending points. Also, printing the number of points on each receipt quickly shows which account is of value after doing a "1 point" test spend. Wouldn't it make sense to set up a limit of say 5 local (or selected) stores where points can be spent? That could cut down a huge amount of fraud simply with very low cost, or maybe a vault on the app which stores the points so that they cannot freely be spent without moving them out to be spent, or just a pin code at the terminal to confirm spend. Basic, basic measures. But then, the millions of points that go unclaimed each year probably more than make up for the losses, so they are not particularly bothered.
