Warning over Prime Energy Drinks after Primary School Child Has Stomach Pumped

In the News

These drinks have been in the news a lot recently mainly because of the extortionate prices people have been charging and paying for just one bottle, in excess of £100 in some cases

Now we have a case of a child having a cardiac episode and needing his stomach pumped after drinking this rubbish

The high caffeine content has been cited as a possible health hazard , yet people continue to buy it !

Nothing quenches a thirst quite like water although I do love the odd can of coke or an energy drink but £1 a can is enough.Don't want water at whisky prices lol.

MelissaLee1 I think some people have been paying premium champagne prices for these drinks M and unfortunately it is the youngsters that have been influenced most all thanks again to social media

Any energy drinks can cause this or any overdose of caffeine, even in adults.

Just fizzy drinks were a treat when I was younger and my parents certainly wouldn't have bought me 500ml of drink for £2-£30 like a lot were over Christmas just because it was what everyone else had (Wow I sound old 🤣) but I do think parenting seems to be very different now.

This is from nationalworlds website: 'Prime Energy. It actually does contain caffeine unlike the Hydration version.

There is an age limit of 18 and it contains 200mg of caffeine per can. Prime has warned on its website that Prime Energy is not suitable for children or pregnant people.'

Parents should definitely take some responsibility.

DeBunny There wouldn't be this frenzy about it D if it wasn't for social media putting it out there , i suspect parents are fighting a battle with their kids over this as they believe all the hype over their parents

Not surprising, drinks only made so popular due to the “celebrity” endorsement. Imagine it’ll move on soon like other fads

My son has just started to ask for it. I really didn't want to buy it anyway but he certainly won't be having it now.

There’s always these sorts of stories when a new drinks craze pops up. I remember a lady turned green after drinking 20 litres of sunny delight.

If the kid had one bottle and this happened it’s worrying but I’m fairly sure he probably drank an excessive amount which in my book means the blame falls on their parents.

Most energy drinks do state not suitable for children or pregnant women. I don’t think they should be sold to under 18s at all , because they are damaging . They are meant to aid ppl training otherwise you don’t need that much energy boosting

Nickyhaslam77 They should come under the same category as alcohol N, as possibly harmful to your health

Nickyhaslam77 i thought energy drinks weren’t allowed to be sold to under 18s but maybe I’m mistaken about that.

You may be correct and the shopkeepers in my area just ignore the law (it wouldn’t surprise me, after all under 16s manage to purchase cigarettes and under 18s purchase alcohol ). The energy drinks have not suitable for under 18s on can /bottle so probably not supposed to be sold to under age

I can’t understand why anyone would but for their children then probably moan that the child is hyperactive. A lot of these illnesses children are being diagnosed or labelled with are down to things like this . A child does not need that much sugar /caffeine /energy boost , whatever rubbish is in them drinks . To be honest a normal healthy adult doesn’t need them drink boosts either , they are for athletes , people exercising at the gym who need to replenish themselves. Most ppl wouldn’t give their child an expresso coffee so y but these harmful drinks . It would cause anyone to be a bit hyperactive.

Nickyhaslam77 not always. It's complex and hard to get an appointment to get a diagnosis. There is things like how a child is brought up that may not help

I don't know why parents buy energy drinks for children. It's well known that it's really bad for them. I drink energy drinks but I'm carefull not to have too much. I drink sugar free version which is more healthy. I need them to give me energy to function normally and it helps with the pain I have in my legs.
