Whales Voice Boxes Are Unique in Making Singing Sounds
In the News
I think whales singing in our oceans are one of the most beautiful of sounds you can hear
They have a specialised voice box, something no other animal has
To Quote 'Whales don't have teeth or vocal chords. Instead, in their voice boxes, they have a U-shaped tissue that allows them to breathe in massive amounts of air and a large “cushion” of fat and muscle not seen in other animal species. Whales sing by pushing the tissue against the fat and muscle cushion'
One reason they sing this way is to mate and the sounds can travel for hundreds of miles across the ocean
A true joy of nature

We went to South Africa years ago, we went whale watching, these animals are amazing to see close up
telmel we could touch them and they loved it, something very special about whales, saw great whites too, didn't touch them though lol
Amazing creatures.Birds too have a syrinx which is like our larynx but has a double chamber so they can make sounds we can't.Except this fella who does rather well.
telmel Great party trick eh? He died in 2015 but would have done a great rendition of the birdy song no doubt.
