What's the Best Thing to Put a Runner Hall Carpet on Your Stairs

Hi was wondering if anyone has put a stair runner on there stairs and what's the best things to use iam going to buy carpet rods to go over it but unsure what's best to stick it down what's the best tape to buy or whatever else you could use thanks 
My nana used to have a runner on her stairs as far as I can remember it was only held on with the carpet rods

and someone else said they rods with nails in them wonder if it would move with just the rods thanks for your comment
