What's All the Fuss about Sourdough Bread?

Other

Tried it for the first time today and was expecting..........well a lot better than what i got! It tasted stale and sour.

You may say what did i expect with the word sour in the name, but carrot cake doesn't taste of carrots.

So many people enthuse about it but i really don't get it.

It's definitely an acquired taste 😀 Because of the fermentation process, it contains many health benefits and more vitamins than 'regular' bread.

Consumer lol, just seems to prove that the things which are supposedly good for you taste horrible and the yummy stuff is bad for you😳

Butter comes straight out the holes lol.

MelissaLee1 the one I bought didn't have any holes so the butter spread nicely, reckon I should have toasted it but it is counter intuitive with supposedly fresh bread!

Lynibis It's ok but vastly over rated.I do like home made Irish Soda bread warm with butter oozing off.

Lynibis the dry ones are nice toasted actually, the loaves need shorter dates on I reckon

Aww.. I absolutely love sourdough bread .. I love Jason's Sourdough brand ..it's costly but worth it. Sourdough bread doesn't last very long as it's quite a rustic traditional bread.

Nadiaparveen well it wouldn't do for us all to like the same things. I guess if I had it from

being young but I am a bit long in the tooth for new tastes now. I do like seeded bread.

Lynibis that's okay 😊 I'm actually surprised I like it as I'm quite a fussy eater .. I don't like a lot of popular basic foods such as tomato sauce or mayonnaise, tuna or raisins 🙈

I really liked it, but not convinced it was worth paying so much extra for when there are other really nice fresh breads out there for a lot less! Ocacsionally have been able to pick it up from Asda yellow label - but not been lucky for a while!

didbygraham my sister introduced me to a gorgeous speciality bread from tescos. It is small and expensive, it is cranberry and cashew bread.

didbygraham they do two others in the range one with olives and I think the other is something like dried tomato but could be wrong, I was only interested in the cashew, cranberry and raisin!

didbygraham I must admit I prefer to buy things like that in person as deliveries always seem to send me stuff that is nearly out of date. Good luck (it is nice toasted though)

It should have a pleasant tang but sadly they often seem dried up ....a fresh one is lovely, started having it as yeast intolerance and these better and easier to digest

We have had it in a restaurant as the 'bread roll' and it was ok, perhaps it was cooked fresh there? It might make a difference if you made your own too but it would be a lot of faff!

The first time I tried it was in San Francisco many years ago and I couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. I just thought it was a trendy phase that would pass but it’s still going strong.

I tried it and it’s not for me. I will stick with what I was brought up with and that’s normal White Bread. I do buy Allinsons Wholemeal only when It’s on special offer. I certainly will not pay £2.00 for Sourdough. I will stick to my £1.09 doorstep Bread from Home Bargains.

My friend makes their own sourdough and it is amazing but the ones I've bought from the shops aren't that great. I don't buy it often, only if it is reduced and my husband wants some.

Unfortunately I find that the window between cutting into a loaf and it becoming inedible, without toasting,is around 6 hours. I'm happy to eat fresh but unless you are going to finish it off within 24 hours it's going to be wasted.

Try a proper one made by an artisan baker then you’ll taste the difference

I've tried a few sourdough loafs and they are ok but my favourite is tiger bread which I think is a Dutch style recipe. If I was rating different types of loafs sourdough would definitely be close to the bottom if not the bottom itself.

However I think some or all of the sourdough bread I've tried is parbaked sourdough from supermarkets possibly from Aldi and Lidl which are low grade high yeast versions due to the parbaking process which would be unfair to compare to maybe a premium baker which offers proper sourdough loafs which can have some health benefits and maybe taste better.

I don't think you can beat a good old tiger loaf, lashings of butter and nothing else needed. Naughty but nice😋

Homemade tastes far better than shop bought. Most supermarket ones don't taste or have the right texture to be sourdough. Buy from an artisan shop or market stall and see the difference. Better still make your own then you'll see why it costs more. It takes a day to make.
