What's Your Thoughts on Bringing Back National Service

In the News

So here we go with the election run up ideas, so national service is on the cards for the Tories, just a ploy to gain old people's votes, and by the sounds of it it won't be mantory, just voluntary lol

Leannexxx what amazes me is the country being in such a mess, the only new idea is to bring this up, it won't get the older people's vote , the fact old people are going to foodbanks is a national disgrace

martinlufc5637 it's all wrong my dad luckily hasn't had to go to the food banks because he's got a private pension he's 3 pound over so he can't get pension credit so he's has to pay everything in full

Leannexxx it's getting ridiculous, inflation has dropped by a lot yet food prices ect.. have stayed the same, this government is shameful, but is labour going to any better, I very much doubt it

Leannexxx I think labour would have won by a landslide, but there immigration policy could be a problem with most voters

In some aspects I think bringing back national service is a good idea are regards discipline, life skills and giving young unemployed people ad job, earn a living and see some of the world. Better than being on the dole and hanging round the streets been a nuisance. But if they have a job at university or have responsibilities like there a carer for a parent or sibling, it shouldn’t be enforce on every adult but I do think some of the younger generation would benefit from the structure, routine, training and discipline that national service can offer

NanaP it won't be compulsory, it will be voluntary from what I've been reading

No point doing it if voluntary. Should be for criminals as prisons are full! But depend on what offence they have done!

bettsjennifer29 Giving them guns and other weapons isn't a good idea, though.

Not worried about it. It won't happen. Highly doubtful they'll win the election so its all just an ditch attempt at gaining headlines & as you say to also appeal to the older folks & those scared of war coming.

From what iv heard/read it would be voluntarily mandatory isn't that just a nice way of say enforced? They say it's because young people are lacking prospects, Well if that's true its because we've had 14 years of no prospects & skills being offered from this very government.

PhilipMarc though labour is better then the tories mainly cos they haven't been in charge for 14 years

Jerseydrew When Blair and Brown were in charge debt levels still went up, industry was lost, trade deficit went up, companies and assets were sold into foreign ownership, huge sums were paid to the EU etc and immigration was high.

The two priorities this country needs is to return to a trading surplus and start paying off our debts but no party is mentioning that they are just utterly clueless about running a country. We need to start turning around our trade deficit and that in itself will bring down our need for borrowing as an economy.

I'm not against National Service in theory but this is a poorly thought out election policy that seems pointless. National service has to be compulsory not optional for those unemployed or those who have committed crime as a youth. Those who have gone into employment, higher education or a apprenticeship should not have to do it unless they have committed crime as a youth. As for the length of national service it could be as little as 3 months or up to a year I see no reason for it to be as long as 2 years although the period could be set by the circumstances of each person. Perhaps someone with a history of criminal activity would have a longer period of national service with maybe 2 years being the maximum period.

It’s kind of a joke that people who have never done it themselves could even suggest national service. Imagine Rishi or any of them in the army 🤣

Whatever your thoughts are and in the unlikely event that he wins the GE, it will most likely end up being another u-turn. They had 14 years to implement this. He is only saying it now because a GE is around the corner.

I think bringing back national service is a desparate and foolish way to obtain votes from a specific type of people. I believe it will fail in an incredibly BIG way. Having been raised at almost every social outing going to an Army club and growing up to see boys returning home with limbs missing, PTSD etc or simply not returning it became quickly apparent that these boys were not fighting for their country they were being used on mass as dispensible toys for rich mens war games.

Just a way of them getting lots of free labour for all the jobs they don't want to pay people to do, litter picking ect, they think voters are stupid, people will see through it

There's nothing conservative about the Conservative party, except in name only. And Reform is just the Tories 2.0.

There's one difference that Tory/Reform could have from Labor, not rejoin the EU and effectively lose/replace the Pound currency with the Euro, otherwise... Not much difference and can't be trusted.

Furthermore, why would anyone join the national service? The borders are wide open and criminals do as they wish meanwhile victims of crime may be punished for standing up for themselves.

its all a mess and clearly not thought out in any way, but then they wont need to as it wont happen, if even they did somehow win, like almost all their other promises. It will be compulsory but it wont be a criminal conviction if they dont do it. so it wont be enforced? Its either compulsory or it isnt. they cant make up their mind. Just a few days ago a minister categorically said there were no plans for national service as it would damage morale in the services!

If it was brought in for those committing a crime, instead of a prison sentence, then it probably would be a good idea. But I can't see it working otherwise. We were discussing it with my parents yesterday. We all said it probably wouldn't be brought in anyway.

I read an article this morning that someone had written. It had some valid points. The young generation went through Covid as we all did and some of still recovering from that. He is only talking about males. What tickled me most was the writer had written, his could not use a dust pan and brush how on earth was he going to use a rifle.

Why? What is the ultimate goal or aim of doing such a thing.

We live in a totally different world to when National service was first introduced in the late 40's with different outlooks, needs and requirements, not sure forcing anything on people these days fits with todays generation.
