When Going on Holiday Do You Yearn for a Can of 'Air' to Bring Home with You?
In the News
Well, your fondest wishes have now come true and you can do just that if you visit Laka Como.
Tourists who are visiting Lake Como in Italy are now able to buy cans of “fresh air” for €9.90 (US$11) apiece
The marketing move, led by communications company ItalyComunica, has forgone filling the cans with any drink and instead will sell them with nothing other than “air” from the region.
According to CNN, the decision to sell the canned air is simply a novel way for people to buy a souvenir and revealed that each can contains 400 millilitres of “100% authentic air” that has been carefully collected from Lake Como.
More than 5.6 million people visited Lake Como in Italy in 2023, and, according to the Lombardy tourism bureau, the visitor numbers are rising, giving the region broad appeal.
According to reports, the decision to market the cans of air came from marketing specialist Davide Abagnale, who initially saw an opportunity when he started with selling Lake Como posters online.
Explaining more about the initiative to can the air from the area, a spokesperson for the business told CNN, that Abagnale wanted to offer “something original, fun and even provocative” as well as “create a souvenir that could be easily transported in a suitcase for tourists”.

Abagnale explained how the cans, which rather than contain any liquid, subvert the norm and give people something closer to a “memory” rather than a “product”.
I have seen other versions of this and I truly believe those who fork out actual money for this 'product' are a sandwich short of a picnic. I have some lilies just opened up (son bought them for me) and the smell is gorgeous, knowing who bought them and the beautiful aroma is enough to lift my spirits
Lynibis I agree and I can't imagine opening a can of 'Lake Como Air' would have the same effect on the senses as your lovely lilies.
tumblespots may be we should go into business and can aromas lol. Lilies, bacon sarnie, chocolate etc
Lynibis That sounds like a good idea as the scents of flowers are uplifting and who doesn't like the smell of bacon or fresh bread, they even recommend bread & coffee smells when selling houses!
I have seen something similar to this on sale in Blackpool souvenir joke shops, but they don't contain sea air, but something a bit less pleasant and more akin to what is expelled after a curry
I doubt if these Como cans contain what they say , who can actually guarantee what is inside, i suspect nothing but the air trapped inside from the manufacturing shop
So as L said you need to be insane to purchase one of these, i would stick to a keyring , at least that's useful
telmel I know that I wouldn't buy one but I'll bet there are plenty of people who would just to see what it smells like!
Ohhh a fool & his money are soon parted springs to mind!!
Nooooo not daft enough to fall for that one, some people eh!!!
That is complete and utter madness, and people will buy these lol open a can of air that will smell of nothing
martinlufc5637 And if you are unlucky they will give to you as a Christmas present, because there is always a joker out there...
It's ok as a silly little gift of souvenir but 10 euros a can is really pushing it. I know other places have done this as well and if people are willing to pay then fair enough, but it wouldn't be for me.
Totally bonkers if people beleive this sort of thing, suppose they could be used for Secret Santa though.
HEDGEHOGS I'd hate to get it as a present, they are just spending money to get a 'nothing' gift!
Pjran Yes, it would probably smell more of the metal of the tin than the supposedly 'lovely air'.
