Why Do Birds Choose to Sit on One Roof over Another?

Ask a Question

Genuine question. I was sitting in traffic the other day and two buildings beside me. Both identical but one was absolutely covered in pigeons but the other had just a few.

Does anyone know why that might be?

With pigeons when one finds a suitable place to rest or roost others tend to follow, it's in their nature to follow each other L

Think it's the age old safety in numbers especially with those are prey. Survival in large nu.bers

Jerseydrew you’re right, I guess you want to be one of the quicker flying pigeons in this instance. Or protect each other perhaps?

My theory is that birds probably like to stay on a roof that is warm, therefore if you have good loft insulation that will go and sit on someone else's roof!

tumblespots I was going to say, ordinarily I would agree with you but both buildings are the same. But you can never tell if one building has a short cut on it. I will need to check it out when the snow comes and let you know.

Now that I’ve seen those birds, I can’t unsee it.

leeanngor Life is like that isn't it, there are several things over the years that I wish I could unsee!

It's because it based on a vantage point for them to see predators , crows are notorious for attacking and killing pigeons

martinlufc5637 thank you and I have learned things I had not thought of. But why one roof over the other. Identical blocks of flats, next to one another?

leeanngor I can't answer that, it's the same as where do all the birds sleep? When it gets dark they just disappear

Never thought about this before actually but it’s a good question. Maybe there is a reason to it or it may just be totally random

I’ve often wondered this myself lol. We get a lot of magpies, and they seem to prefer my neighbours roof
