Why Isn't the Rise in Dog Attacks and Fatalities being addressed?

In the News

Reading about yet another person killed in the UK by a dog, an XL Bully in this case which is common now, I looked up the records for dog fatalities and the rise since 1999 is really alarming. Its getting worse each year. Why isnt this being address as a matter urgency?

I dunno why but it's down to the owners most of the time they only get a ban and it's wrong

Yeah hard to blame the dog, it is a problem but it’s such a hard thing to police

Where are you getting your data from and are you referring to UK deaths only?

I feel strongly that all dogs should be on a lead when they get taken out. My daughter was bitten by a dog a few years ago, she was quietly walking with her boyfriend. The owner just grabbed the dog and ran off!

There are also so many sheep killed by dogs, reported recently on Countryfile.

I think the law needs to be changed so owners face tougher prosecution. Manslaughter would be a more fitting conviction for those who own dogs that kill.

it does seem odd that nothing is being done. It does seem to be a growing issue - or is it just that more are now being reported? Once again some dog owners are giving us all a bad name

It's not the dogs fault but the owners fault or previous owners fault. You can't blame the breed. Lockdown hasn't helped either the was a rise of people getting dogs and not looking into it properly.

Some dog breeds are more violent and harder to train. I really think people need to be licensed to own a dog. It's a huge responsibility to the animal and other people and those with criminal records for violence etc should be excluded from having a dog license. To have a dog in any home should mean all adults should have a dog license. The dog license shouldn't have to be expensive just a basic training course teaching them how to care for a dog and their responsibilities to others and would be a one off cost unless there is an incident where it could be removed with a delay in re-applying.

Dog breeders would require a commercial dog license which would be more difficult to obtain.

I think dogs should be on leashes outside and I know that sounds terrible .. or perhaps they can make designated dog friendly parks but then again I've seen dogs squabble with other dogs in parks
