Why Do People Rely so Much on Fast Food?
Ask a Question
My sister for example currently has cancer (hope she beats it of course), is fat (there's no way around it – no pun intended), and nearly every day what she eats is fast food (fried this, fried that) than eat something more... Healthy.
I don't know how people are okay with it, if it were me I'd get nauseated from consuming that type of food every day. Even the smell is a tad unpleasant.
I'll admit, I went this morning to McDonald's (haven't been there in months) for a breakfast meal of £2.79, bacon + egg burger and a cappucino. I honestly liked more drinking the cappucino than eating the burger (somewhat dry and tasteless).
England really needs its own "MAHA" as people are too glued to junk food.
Have you thought that shes gonna eat what she wants because she's realised like it's too short I couldn't afford to eat out all the time but now and again I don't mind it
Because they were never shown how to cook? Step-son and family eat fast food either take-away or delivered ALL the time, breakfast, lunch, dinner/tea anytime in-between, even going for a take out coffee. His partner has no idea how to cook and doesn't want to learn, she doesn't have a busy daily schedule, walk to school and back twice a day. He works full time and dinner/tea is never made. And yes they never have any money.
lilyflower ...That's where all your stepson's cash is going..
What does the partner do all day if your stepsons at work & their children are at school??
I didn't work for 8 years after giving birth to our daughter September '98. This was MY partner & my choice, he was earning enough with overtime as a Support Worker before his contract was bought out!
My partner & I made our decision on we saw as best for our daughter.
I cooked, cleaned, shopped & did the garden, our daughter was my little shadow, her Daddy worked long hours & loved spending time with us on days off.
There was always fresh food available, McDonalds was a treat now & again as was a takeaway...
janphoenix51 I did exactly the same as you, always had a meal ready etc and where we lived McDonalds didn't exist. We only came unstuck when he was made redundant but made cut backs and survived. Stepson has a good job but spends money like water, he says he's only with girlfriend because of child (he has another to another Mum, and she has 3 to another Dad). The house etc is in her name (he only sofa surfs). She had a job in social care, it was that or stop the benefits, but it got to much for her. She's at home all day watching TV or drinking coffee with her Mum who sits at home watching TV. He cleans the house when it becomes to much and tries to do the laundry but doesn't see why he should, it's a womans job and her works! His Dad and I have tried to give help tips or show them and they're not interested and they aren't kids at 35 and 33.
I honestly believe it's habit. If you get used to grabbing something on the way to and from work then you'll never really have the inclination to go home and cook. We learn from our homelife as children, if you saw real food being prepared then it's the norm for you. Obviously there are exceptions. Good grief every other programme on tv is a cookery programme, there are no excuses for not trying to learn
Auntielettie I don't watch Live TV and those type of shows are honestly pretty boring to me, but completely inoffensive and people can probably learn from it, anyway.
With so many fast food shops everywhere it's no wonder obesity isn't going down. That said, I'd be against banning them.
Some people are chronically ill and feel too tired, sore, drained to cook for themselves. I feel lucky to be able to prepare food for myself
I think a lot of people don’t have the time or patience to prepare a meal. A casserole can take hours to slow cook plus all the chopping and cutting. I’ll make a large pot to find us a couple of meals.
I also had a McDonald’s today as I did the receipt feedback and used that to be McDonald’s chicken sandwich n fries.. I enjoyed it bar the black bottom bun so just ate half bun think it’s time and because it’s habit plus that will do me for the day.
Probably convience, if you have large family it's a lot of food to prepare and then there is the cleaning up afterwards lol, we barely eat takeaways anymore, too expensive
I really hope your sister gets well soon. Mainly convenience I imagine but that comes at a cost as poor nutrition can directly and indirectly cause disease. Sadly, many people get a diagnosis and medication but no guidelines on how to improve their nutrition/lifestyle I choose to take responsibility for my own health and don't make excuses.
I have a friend who had cancer (and is now cancer free). The hospital's cancer nurse told her to avoid fried food, sugary desserts and drinks. She too was overweight pre-cancer and is now a healthily size.
I think you will have to help her out by buying and cooking good quality fish (salmon), boiled potatoes and green vegetables. Or is it possible for you and her to get together and discuss healthy eating?
I am hoping your sister gets better soon.
I have a friend at work and on Saturday evening he said his bank account loves him as he spent over £140 on takeaways that week. On Sunday evening guess what? He had another takeaway delivered. I think Its an easy option to not bother or dont want to cook. I can honestly say I have not had a takeaway In such a long time as they are too expensive. For what you pay you can get lots more out of your money at a supermarket. A total waste of money In my opinion. Yes you can click away & order online but you can do that for Supermarkets too.
Hi just seen this topic after reading your sis health hope she’ll b fine I’m not fan of fast food but my family members loves eating from takeaway the amount of foods deliveries comes our house no one can do honest wasting money too no one listen thanks for this topic
Don’t get me wrong I love it once in a while, but too much and I feel greasy, but I love cooking so cook most of our meals.
I do enjoy a Chinese takeaway and probably have one about once every 2 weeks perhaps an average of every 10 days I might guess. I love Chinese but not keen on my own Chinese curries or the supermarket versions. However Indian curries I'm actually pretty flexible about and actually like the supermarket versions like the Tesco boxed curry sets. I did get a Burger King meal recently as it was a free burger if I spent £3 but haven't had a Burger King meal I think for maybe 15 years or more before that. Of the big US takeaway firms probably KFC is the one I use most perhaps every 2 to 3 years. I had a KFC meal perhaps 9 months ago where I had a big discount code that knocked it down 40% or something like that but before that I couldn't remember the last time I had KFC.
When I have a Chinese curry now its about £20 delivered for what I order and that is just for me. Just a few months ago it was about £17. However I do try to use discount codes where possible.
I've seen people buy takeaways for their whole families and it could be £80 or so, a huge amount of money really. If I was in that situation I would definitely be buying from a supermarket curry selection and probably spending only a quarter of that.
If my income dropped and I had to be more conservative with money I would probably stop the takeaways to be honest and just sort out a Friday night or Saturday night food treat another way at a much lower price.
If I had cancer I'd be eating fast food as I wouldn't want to be cooking.
It's cheap sadly. What's meant to be a treat has become the better value for money to feed yourself. You can go sit in KFC etc have a cheap meal and sit in the warmth
Jerseydrew I would eat what I like if terminal, but otherwise I would do everything in my power to help heal myself. I am sick of people deliberately living unhealthy lifestyles and expecting the nhs to fund their treatment when they get sick. I think the welfare state has done away with personal responsibility.
Wishing your sister well but fast food is not the way to go for anybody. A healthy diet is what she needs, definitely not fast foods.
One of the greatest ways to fight cancer is fasting. It causes the body to consume itself often starting with damaged cells and proteins etc and puts you into ketosis. It helps preventing spreading of cancer. There has been quite a few studies about it. However if you are faced with cancer your emotions may need the support of food. I'm a comfort eater myself. If I had cancer could I mentally deal with it and also fast at the same time. It would take a lot of will power. Some foods are anti-cancer though so changing your diet can help but probably not as beneficial as fasting. Fasting works because it forces the body to go into ketosis which the cancer cells can't use for fuel. Glucose feeds cancer cells. Processed sugars are the worst thing to eat when you have cancer which of course most fast food has in abundance. A high protein diet with complex carbs would be a better option. I.e. fresh natural food. I'm saying that as someone who loves processed foods and sugars but the science is pretty clear. Unfortunately so many commercial food companies try to blur the science with fake scientific studies so its important to get your data from studies not influenced by food companies because they are keen to always show ultra-processed food in a positive light.
I guess it’s addictive? And it satisfies a craving that only junk food seems to fulfil. It’s cr@p for you but there are plenty of other things we do that’s no good for us
Most people I know who "eat badly " simply don't know how to cook. Personally I enjoy cooking and like making it just the way I like it
