Recycling & Free Delivery for some Items and Not Others? FURTHER UPDATE
Other
Bought a new fridge freezer today, i had two in mind with just a £5 difference in price. I had seen recycling for £19.99 and one offered free delivery.
I bought and paid instore but first choice did not offer recycling, second one had to pay for delivery despite it saying free. I had no problem with paying for both but it made me wonder why on earth the dearer one offered no recycling for your old appliance. How on earth is a single elderly person meant to get rid of the old one?
It's crazy that there are so many differences in recycling especially when they really want you to do it, and delivery charges which I think are made up on a whim.
Assuming that you can get the item to the street (a job in itself!) then you could pay your local council to come and take the item away. Ours charges £35 for 4 items so perhaps you could join up with some of your neighbours who also have large items to dispose of and share the costs?!
We offer a chargeable collection service for bulky waste and electrical items. A charge of £35 is made to collect up to four items which must be paid for at the time you make the order. (NB: There is a maximum of four items per fortnight). www.e-lindsey.gov.uk/bulky
I hope you get something sorted out
Thanks tumblespots I wasn't very clear above as I did go for the slightly cheaper one that offered recycling, even though it was same make and very slightly cheaper. Just don't understand why some and not others.
My local waste people do offer the service but it is a big American fridge freezer and there is no way I could get it outside. I wouldn't like to ask my sons (one lives an hour away) as they are no spring chickens lol.
Anyway looking forward to delivery as old one has some hot spots and making weird noises! I will have more room in kitchen and hopefully slightly lower leccy bills
Lynibis They do say that the newer appliances use less energy so hopefully you will be quids in on that and the extra space.
Getting older isn't what it is cracked up to be is it, there are so many things that we could do years ago but we struggle with now. Mind you, an american fridge freezer (we have one too) is too big for anyone
Well, I got up with a bad feeling and boy was I right. Today was delivery of my new fridge freezer and they duly arrived walked in kitchen and said couldn't take the old American style one. This was despite 2 members of staff in Argos telling me they would and charging £20 for it. I had it all ready with my freezer food in plastic bags with ice blocks, fridge stuff same, all the shelves and drawers on front drive (in an effort to be helpful) and they would not budge, health and safety.
I had to tell them to take it away, arranged a refund, sat and cried for 2 minutes then started trying to find a way of getting rid of old one, now regretting sending away the new one.
Phoned ao.com/ as they had the one I wanted so ordered it and the guy on phone has assured me they will take the old one. Well we will see!
Just spent ages putting all the shelves, drawers and food back in old one, right ticked off
We bought a new bed base recently but had to organise removal ourselves as the company only delivers and assembles the bed. The council is collecting it, but we still need to get it outside, luckily there are 2 of us.
MrsCraig that is why I was upset because I knew our local council say you have to have it outside at 7am on collection morning. Yes,I have two sons but one is on holiday and other is over an hour away and even together we couldn't do it. How on earth do single people (especially olduns) manage?
Anyway, I am so glad that AO came to the rescue and hopefully it won't be the same scenario next week!
You can see why people dump their waste when it is so difficult to get rid of it properly. My Dad arranged for the council top collect an old double mattress. He had to have it outside his house by before 7am - but they wouldn't take it if it was wet. He therefore left it under his garage door which was left open. The men refuse to take it as it wasnt 'outside' his house. After the resulting argument he was reported to the council and received an official visit a few days later to warn him not to speak to the staff like that again. It does seem like the council dont want to take anything at all if they can help it. Its pretty expensive too so its not like you are not paying for it!
didbygraham that is absolutely disgusting. My sons warned me about all this saying you can't rely on or trust anyone anymore. What has happened to common courtesy and kindness, would it have hurt them to just do it without complaint? I bet if he had offered more money they would have done it.
If your old Appliance Is or was working why not donate It to " The British Heart Foundation " Furniture & Electrical. They will collect It for FREE.
We have a man locally that will collect items for scrap. He's very polite and turns up at the time arranged and takes the stuff away for free. He's taken our washing machine, cooker and tumble dryer in the past. If you have any local social media pages it maybe worth a look as that's how we found out about our local guy.
Midnightflower we have one too, he parks outside my house lol. But they don't take fridge freezers because of the gas bottles, plus again the size is the problem. If two men with a trolley etc can't do it I doubt anyone else would. I am just hoping now that A0 are true to their word.
Well AO delivered my new fridge/freezer and took away the old one. Huzzah. I cannot tell you how relieved I am.
The two guys were friendly, professional and even though they had not been told it was an American style there was no complaint. They were also extremely careful of walls and doors. I was so relieved and grateful I gave them a tip which was so well deserved. Well done AO, big thumbs down to Argos.
