Is Windows 11 Aggressive Power Saving Slowing down Your Productivity?

Money Saving

I've noticed this about people and their laptops for example that they haven't altered the settings on their laptop so what should be a reasonably fast laptop actually goes really slow. I'm sure for many people they have decided to upgrade based on the poor performance of their computer.

One of the big issues is Windows 11 more aggressively tries to reduce power nowadays moving from performance power settings to balanced power settings by itself. It might also boot with less than the full number of CPU's used and only use other CPU's when under extreme load. It's all very annoying as most people want maximum speed at all times especially when a laptop is mains powered and you don't have to worry about battery levels. Even on battery a laptop that might last 8-12hrs on normal power settings may last 4-6hrs on best performance but that is still a usable amount of time.

Anyway how do people keep their windows computers fast?

My tips;

Use debloating software like bloatynosey to reduce a huge amount of un-necessary files that Windows installs.

Uninstall everything you don't use.

Set the msconfig file to the maximum number of CPU's available in the advanced settings.

Customise balanced settings so its using 100% cpu power at all times, make both minimum and maximum 100% so even if windows 11 switches back to balanced its still actually performance mode.

Obviously if you have a very fast PC this is not such a big issue but many are using low power laptops with Celerons, i3, pentium type processors and their AMD equivalents which can struggle a lot.

If you are on a laptop with only 4GB that is non-upgradeable then you may have to be more aggressive in how you trim the fat of the operating system.

Hopefully you can get a few more years out of your PC by thinning down the operating system. Remember with Windows nowadays many background tasks with consume CPU cycles are purely monitoring you for their own Commercial advantage. Telemetry type information and which sites you visit etc. You pay for this with a slower computer.

Windows 11 haha, what a joke of an OS. 😆

I'll keep using my trustworthy Windows 10 LTSC until 2029 and then who knows, probably a Linux distro unless Microsoft regains Windows users trust and makes Windows 12 similar to 7/10 than 11.

Speaking of Windows 12, there are rumors it'll be released as early as 2024 so it certainly doesn't seem like Windows 11 did too well. lol

My ranking of Windows OSes

Windows 95 - Bad

Windows 98 - Good

Windows Me - Bad

Windows 2000 - Good

Windows XP - Good

Windows Vista - Bad

Windows 7 - Good

Windows 8 - Bad

Windows 10 - Good

Windows 11 - Bad

Windows Me was far worse than "bad," but I'll keep this family-friendly.

By the way, the forced "upgrade" from 10 to 11 on Windows Update can be blocked:

PhilipMarc interesting choices - pretty much agree but windows 95 was a lot better than anything that came before it whilst 98 was pretty underwhelming. I have only just started to use Win11 on a brand new laptop and so far haven't run into any issues but time will tell. Main PC apparently wont run 11. Over the years I managed to time new computer purchases to decent versions of Windows - so got 95, XP, 7and 10 all brand new and missed out on the rubbish ones in between

PhilipMarc Yes I may go to Windows 10 LTSC seems like a good move on a lowspec laptop I have. Windows 11 at its core is really Windows 10 but with cosmetic changes many of which are bad.

didbygraham You can use Rufus and a normal windows 11 iso to install windows 11 on older hardware but you don't need to. Some newer hardware seems to be appearing which is Windows 11 only i.e. no drivers for Windows 10 but I'm unsure if that is nonsense as windows 10 and 11 are very similar. Certainly many devices you buy are not compatible with operating systems prior to Windows 10 as no driver support for much of the hardware.

BonzoBanana Windows 11 is just 10 reskinned with more restrictions and mimicking iOS/Android. 😕

BonzoBanana You can download the LTSC clean (= from Microsoft) ISO here: 1fichier.com/?cycm2a6ap01eqvfhdmln

I install this on all laptops/notebooks I use and whatnot. It runs great and there's no Windows Store, Cortaba, or Edge.

It does have Internet Explorer which you can remove via the Control Panel. Internet Explorer... That's nostalgic.

PhilipMarc What about registration? The current laptop I'm using does have Windows 11 but I'm using privacy.sexy scripts to remove a lot of bloat but I very much doubt its as lean as Windows LTSC though but Cortana, Edge and Windows Defender are gone. How does Windows 10 LTSC cope with games, does it install all the normal software to run the latest games?

BonzoBanana Windows Defender is always active as it's the built-in AV, while Edge, Cortana, and the Windows Store are not present.

As for games, if you want to run the latest games then I've seen folks saying that LTSC isn't suitable, but for older ones it's fine.

And this edition has extended support until 2029 (6 years to go 🙂) so I'm not installing Windows 11 for personal use. Maybe I'll install Windows 12 when it launches if that's actually good and debloated.

Btw, the retail Windows 10 is supported until 2025, unfortunately. It should be longer.

I keep rejecting the upgrade and looks like I’m making the right choice. I’m happy with windows 10 so why would i change

This is another of the reasons that I don't convert to Windows 11. My laptop keeps offering me the chance to upgrade for free but I am holding out as all I hear about Windows 11 isn't good!

tumblespots That's probably a good move. I can't really think of any obvious advantages of Windows 11 except its nice to try something new but its larger, slower and Windows 10 is probably the optimal operating system at the moment.

tumblespots I tried keeping an open mind about 11 and debloating it to make it better, but nope, it still sucks, imo.

Chris Titus Tech released a video about debloating 11:

I tried this yesterday on a 4GB RAM Compaq laptop and even with the junk removed, it still wasn't a very good experience (the Start Menu looking like an iOS/Android menu is weird). I ended up formatting and installing 10 LTSC again.

Let's see what Windows 12 turns out to be...
