Will Woolworths' Return Bring Back Childhood Memories?
Ask a Question
When i saw this article i was thrilled, a store that might be making a comeback when so many are closing
And not any old store, but one of the most iconic, woolworths
I have fond memories of woolworths , especially the 'pick n mix' amongst others
Lets hope the German CEO keeps to his word when he says new UK shops are on his “bucket list”
Does this excite you ?

MelissaLee1 I totally agree with you, we lost Woolworths but gained Wilkinson, then lost that. Hopefully Wilkinsons will come back one day, so miss it.
Loved Woolies back in the day, bought a lot of our daughter's clothing from there, always bought my Christmas decorations there, they had some gorgeous ones..
We liked the Woolworth Cafe back in the day,we used to go whenever we were in Sheffield Centre & hungry!
At Christmas they did these gorgeous Viennese Whirl Mince Pies, not a fan of Mince Pies but these were soooo nice..
I hope it does come back remember going in there when I was a kid with my mum to get my cds
I loved woolies. I've still got my Xmas tree from when woolies shut down. Great shop stuff was great value and lasted. I've a whisk and garlic crushes from when j moved out of my parents in the 90s
Loved Woolworths back in the day. When i was in middle school the highlight of our week would be going into town on a Friday after school to buy our cassette/CD singles with our pocket money & a pick & mix. Fab times! When I had my son it was my go to for his toys etc.
The highstreet is very different these days. Now they would have to compete price wise to the likes of home bargains/ B&M etc & I'm not convinced they could.
I loved Woolworths, they sold all sorts, I use to get all my records/CDs from there, be good to see it back
Another foreign owned major high street store will only add to our debts and further reduction in living standards unfortunately. The UK economy is heading for a hard recession soon because of such excessive debts. Already taxation is at a 70 year high because we have to service the interest on our debts. I can't see it being worth the investment in the UK but we shall see. It could start a price war with similar UK retailers which will be good for UK consumers at first but then if a better resourced German company survives and the UK retailers disappear we will be left in an even worse economic state.
Do people not realise this German company has simply bought the brand, so it won't be Woolworths coming back at all?
gothvixen Maybe they will make a better job with it G, after all, many of the UK companies operating here are owned by investors from abroad
Heres a statistic on google going back to 2017 so the figure is probably higher now
Mar 27, 2017 — As many as 24145 UK businesses are owned by companies located abroad according to figures from the Office for National Statistics
DazLee67 That is one of the craziest comments I've seen. When we joined the EU and entered the free market of Europe the high price of sterling meant we couldn't compete and we ended up with a huge trade deficit and many companies like Ford moved factories from the UK to mainland Europe where it was cheaper because they didn't need to make cars here because of the free market. The huge trade deficit meant huge amounts of sterling were transferred to European companies who bought up British companies with that money. When we left Europe we had about £1.8 trillion of debt and the Net International Investment Position figure was terrible.
The vast majority of British firms that have been sold has been while we were part of the EU.
We were never a suitable candidate to join the EU and this is probably the conservatives biggest mistake. Labour were against it at the time and gave a huge number of reasons why it wouldn't work and they were right. We would have been far better off being like Norway or Switzerland and not joining.
Lets not forget many other European countries have staggering debts within the EU and still making huge contributions to the EU budget like France. What we need is more tariffs to protect our economy and when we get to the point where we need an IMF bailout that will probably be the first thing they put in place to protect our economy.
telmel It's difficult to compare countries but the Net International Investment Position is the best way I can think of. It shows all assets vs liabilities so if you follow this link you will see a list of nations. Click on the far right column with negative figures at the top. Japan for example has huge public sector debts but has huge assets around the world like car manufacturing plants and other investments so they have a positive NIIP rating despite huge debts where as the UK is -25.7 of GDP so if the GDP is 2.5 Trillion overall we have a inbalance of over 600 billion of liabilities (foreign owned assets or liabilities). France is slightly worse at 29.9 and Ireland has over 100% of its GDP figure is foreign owned assets or their liabilities.
However its important not think of all foreign investment into this country as bad but if you get a british company taken over and asset stripped and then sending all the profits abroad that is hugely damaging. However when Ford made cars here for example it was a huge asset creating wealth and jobs with huge product exports even though profits were exported. Shops like Lidl and Aldi are hugely damaging as they import more foreign goods as a percentage of the products they sell and of course export profits. So some foreign owned businesses are hugely beneficial and some are hugely damaging with lots inbetween. Some countries like Poland and Hungary have had huge foreign investment setting up factories there to create products to be sold in Europe and these are new investments creating huge jobs and skills and hugely beneficial but still makes their NIIP rating as a percentage of GDP look bad.
Hope there’s lot of truth to this. Loved Woolworths. Was great store with all sorts of stuff in it. B&M moved into our old woolies store but it’s not as good especially at Christmas
The state of the UK High Street trade at the moment it's doesn't seem like a very sensible business decsion , also my experience of bringing some back is that they are never the same as we remembered them ,and no where near as good.
I Hope so used to love that shop ..i think its british too so thats a bonus !! ..welcome back !
Who didn't love a Woolworths and we had a lovely cafe in the one I used to go to in Oxford city centre.
I loved Woolies in our town of Dumbarton. We really need a decent shop in our high street, its a great idea
Id love to see them back but i just can’t imagine there’s a place for them in the current climate sadly
ink it is great news, \woolworths was \a great store selling such a widw range of items at reasonable prices! Always good value for money & great competition for other stores.
How fantastic would this be. I remember looking through all the posters for bands there ,of course pic and mix and the cafe. The other shop that would be good to see again is C&A
