Worlds Deadliest Chick Hatches in Cotswolds Bird Park

In the News

It might look sweet and innocent , but this southern cassowary chick will grow up to be one of the most dangerous birds in the world

Not only can they grow to a height of 5ft 11'' and can weigh 9 stone , they have deadly 10 cm claws that they have used to kill people in the past

More recently one killed its owner in Florida 5 years ago

But they are a protected species and this one is the first to have hatched at Birdland in over 25 years

So don't expect it to be doing the 'birdie song' any time soon , it is more suited to jurassic park

I had to get my uncle in Australia to fend of a hungry emu who took a liking to the lunch in my back pack.I tried to run..er not very clever they are speedy and I was pursued and petrified.

Wow never heard of these birds. Can imagine why they are protected if they are dangerous would be frightening to encounter one

Jerseydrew I suppose if a dinosaur , or a Pterodactyl to be more relevant, existed today J , they would be protected despite being highly dangerous

I've seen videos previously of them walking along the beach in Australia. A person is just out walking and suddenly notices a Cassowary to his side. A quick look shows loads of videos of Cassowaries at the beach in Australia. They are very good at defending themselves that is for sure. Beautiful bird but I'd certainly like to keep them at a distance from me. Britain's birds seem a bit unimpressive compared to Australia but at least one bird is bigger here and that is the Seagull.

BonzoBanana Thank goodness cassowary's can't fly B, imagine something that size dumping on you from a great height like seagulls do 😬

martinlufc5637 It's said a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, i wouldn't be having one of these in my hand, they can stay in the bush 😀

telmel Considering they now say many of the smaller dinosaurs had feathers you wonder if in prehistoric times if there were dinosaurs very similar to this. The face looks much more like many of the smaller dinosaurs.

martinlufc5637 Thanks for posting the above picture. My husband and I travelled extensively across Australia by camper van and we saw lots of signs warning us about them but never actually saw one.We had emus on one camp site one of which swiped another camper's breakfast.Quite aggressive.

Best birds ever.

I wrote a homework sentence about one once, and the teacher marked it wrong, cos she'd never heard of it. I've still not forgiven her nearly 40yrs later
