Is It Wrong to Ask People to Bring a Bottle for a Christmas Party ?

Ask a Question

When I waa young, we would do a bring a bottle party 😊

I was wondering if it would be rude to do something like that now a days.

Everyone has their own favourites drinks. Gin, vodkas, lagers or beers etc. By the time you get it all, it costs £100s 🙈

No that is fine with me, if they do not like it they are probably not worth inviting, I would bring a big bottle of water.

No , perfectly normal . Not just for Xmas parties but for BBQs etc . Everyone turns up with a bottle or two or a case of beer without being asked - It's the done thing around here . Caution though 🤔 you can end up drinking some ropey stuff (Chateau Poundland 2022 comes to mind 😮) . If anything have a few soft drinks /tea /coffee to hand .

I wouldn't dream of turning up at a party without taking some drink always MORE than I'll probably drink (sometimes food too) without even being requested to do so. Nor do I think will most people.

Beware of those who when asked to bring a bottle, bring an empty one thinking they will be supplied with some booze to take home with them. (they don't go to many parties😀)

No not at all, it's still much cheaper than going to pub to socialise and you can drink what you enjoy.

If you’re hosting the party then the least guests should do is bring a bottle or two. Be bold with your invitation stating bring a bottle.

No perfectly fine, why wouldn't someone be prepared to bring a drink of their choice. Otherwise it can become pretty expensive for the host.

Of course not. When I used to have parties I had a little spiral bound notepad with an item or items written on each page so it included food and I didn’t end up with 25 bottles of red wine lol

Always been BYOB back in the day.

I wouldn't even think about going to a party without contributing.

I would say that is absolutely fine to bring a bottle and depending on the situation and the kind of party I think it is also suitable to bring food as well. Just check with the host first.

I always buy all the booze and food for a party at my house, I don’t expect anyone to bring anything and wouldn’t ask. But everyone what comes always brings something, most will bring to much and I’m left with more than I started with.

but it works both ways I would always take with me when going elsewhere.

in this day and age I don’t think it’s a bad thing to ask everybody to bring a bottle but if they are your friends I would imagine they would without asking..

Not rude at all. I don't drink alcohol but could bring the mixers for people's drinks or maybe bring some snacks for the party. My parents and their friends used to alternate who had the New Year's Eve party and everybody always brought something.

I think it's a better idea as like you say everyone has a drink they prefer and most likely already have it in their house 🙂

Not at all! Whenever me and my partner have house parties we specify to bring your own booze, I usually buy mixers but that’s my limit !

Seems like good sense to me. It's a long standing tradition to bring something to a party, bringing your favourite tipple to drink is perfectly acceptable.

not wrong at all. if you are hosting it is only right for people to bring a bottle. hosting xmas parties is a real expense and i am sure anyone would be grateful for an invite.
