The Body Shop Moves To Appoint Administrators - Is This The End?
The Body Shop has announced plans to appoint administrators this week, leaving shoppers to wonder whether this is the end for the beloved beauty retailer.
A staple of the British high street since 1976, The Body Shop is now making moves to bring in administrators for a company overhaul. As is often the way with administrators, there will likely be store closures and job losses in the company's future.
Despite having more than 200 shops across the UK, the retailer suffered a disappointing sales period throughout Christmas and January - a time that is usually particularly profitable for most shops.
But, it's not all bad news. It seems unlikely The Body Shop will disappear completely, and instead their priority will be lowering their costs and reducing their operation.
Known for it's ethical approach to beauty, the brand has changed hands three times over the years. The initial sale to L'Oreal was seen as a betrayal by some loyal fans to the brand's sustainable and ethical stance.
The business was last sold last last year for £207 million, and, despite moving manufacturing to the Philippines in an effort to lower production costs, it seems The Body Shop like many high street favourites is struggling in the current retail climate.
Tom Church, Co-founder of money saving community LatestDeals.co.uk commented, "it's always sad to hear of companies bringing in administrators. Of course you feel for the staff, and the local high streets losing another shop. The bright side here is it doesn't seem as though it's goodbye and The Body Shop will hopefully recover with the new measures they're taking."
