Boots, Cineworld, and Tesco Set to Close More UK Stores by End of October
- Boots to shut final 10 stores of its planned 300 closures
- Cineworld to close six sites as part of a major restructuring plan
- Tesco temporarily closing its High Wycombe superstore for a year-long refurbishment
Several major retailers, including Boots, Cineworld, and Tesco, are preparing to close more UK branches by the end of October. The move comes as these companies continue to adapt their store estates amid changing market conditions.
Boots
The pharmacy chain announced last year that it would close 300 stores across the UK due to declining sales. So far, 290 locations have been shut, with the remaining 10 set to close in the coming weeks. Boots stated that the closures primarily target areas where another store is nearby, allowing the business to focus on investing in key locations.
Cineworld
Cineworld, the UK’s second-largest cinema chain, has revealed plans to close six sites as part of a broader restructuring plan aimed at restoring profitability. The affected locations are in Glasgow, Bedford, Hinckley, Loughborough, Yate, and Swindon. A spokesperson said the plan is designed to attract future investment and ensure a sustainable future for the business.
Tesco
Tesco’s High Wycombe superstore will close temporarily this month, with plans to reopen in autumn 2025. The retailer says the refurbishment will give the store a “refreshed look and feel” for its customers.
Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commented: “These closures are a reflection of the challenges facing the retail industry. While it's disappointing for affected communities, it's part of a necessary strategy to ensure long-term sustainability for these businesses.
I can't say I'm surprised a cinema chain is struggling, I've not been for years and home TV's are so amazing nowadays. Gone are the days when TV's had 26" screens with a goldfish effect and crappy single channel sound. Modern TV's cost nothing for huge sizes. Even good projectors can be bought for £50 or less.
I'm not surprised Boots is closing some stores. Although it's a great chain, it's prices are at the high end and can often be found cheaper elsewhere. I think they try to put themselves in the same category as say selfridges with their beauty counters and staff who help with advice etc, but ultimately it's still a high street chemist. I think if they cut their prices made things more affordable they'd definitely find they'd have a much busier brand. Just my personal opinion.
When my local Boots was selected to close, they were reducing lots of stuff quite cheaply. I got hair dye and vitamins which had a long date on them. If the items were was 3 for 2 you got the discount. Even baby items, shampoo's and anything that was on the shelf. Hope this info will help anyone who wants a bargain.
