Domino's Launches 2 NEW Pasta Inspired Pizza Flavours & Fans Are Divided

  • Domino's Pizza introduces lasagne and carbonara pizzas.
  • Chef Michele Pascarella criticizes the new offerings, stating they are not true to Italian cuisine.
  • Twitter reactions suggest the chain is "declaring war on Italy."

Domino's Pizza has stirred the pot by introducing two new pizza flavors inspired by classic Italian pasta dishes: lasagne and carbonara. These novel creations aim to blend the comfort of Italian cuisine with the convenience of pizza. However, the move has sparked a heated debate, with some saying these pizzas stray too far from traditional Italian recipes.

The Ultimate Lasagne pizza is a hearty affair with a rich cheese sauce, ground beef, tomatoes, onions, herbs, and mozzarella, all finished with a drizzle of tomato sauce. Meanwhile, the Ultimate Carbonara pizza offers a creamy cheese sauce base topped with smoked bacon, mushrooms, and mozzarella. Despite their inventive approach, these pizzas have raised eyebrows, especially among purists of Italian cuisine.

Michele Pascarella, a respected chef who was named Global Pizza Maker of the Year 2023, voiced his opposition to the new Domino's offerings. Speaking to The Sun, Pascarella, who hails from Naples and runs the renowned Napoli pizzeria in Chiswick, West London, expressed disbelief at the concept, stating, "Italian people would not eat these pizzas." He criticized the ingredient choices, pointing out inaccuracies such as the inclusion of mushrooms and cream in the carbonara pizza, which deviate from the traditional recipes.

Despite the backlash, Domino's remains optimistic. Louise Pilkington, the chain's director of innovation, defended the new pizzas, suggesting they're a fusion of home comfort and classic Italian flavors. "So why not put them on a pizza?" she asked, challenging culinary conventions.

Adela Whittingham at The Sun reported on the controversy, highlighting the mixed reactions from the public and culinary experts alike.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commented, "Domino’s new lasagne and carbonara pizzas are a bold move, blending traditional Italian tastes with the beloved pizza form. It’s a testament to the brand’s innovative spirit, though it’s clear they've touched a nerve with purists. Ultimately, the success of these pizzas will depend on the appetite for culinary adventure among their customers."
