REVEALED: 10 Top Christmas Presents Cheaper to Buy Now

  • Experts urge shoppers to get organised now ahead of Christmas
  • Savings of up to 66% can be made across popular gifting categories such as tech, fragrances, beauty, fashion and home appliances this August

New data has revealed that around one in 10 of the most popular Christmas presents bought by Brits are cheaper to buy in August than the usual shopping months of October, November and December.

After searches for “how many shopping days left until Christmas?” started breaking out on Google last month, one of Europe’s leading price comparison sites, idealo.co.uk, were keen to support shoppers in getting organised to avoid last minute panic buying that could see them wasting money.

idealo’s data team analysed the 100 most searched for gifting products between October and December in 2023 to reveal the best times to buy and secure items at their lowest price.

Looking at the price history data, from August until December last year, across leading categories including tech, fragrances, beauty, fashion and home appliances – findings show that shopping in Summer can result in savings of up to 66%.

Men’s fragrance and women’s beauty were revealed as the categories where most discounts are available in August, accounting for 67% of the products highlighted by idealo to buy sooner rather than later.

For example, 100ml of the famous Sauvage Eau de Toilette can be picked up for £62.55 this month which is a 17% saving when comparing to its most expensive price point of £75.42 in October last year.

And, whilst Black Friday is often thought as one of the cheapest times to start checking off the Christmas list, idealo’s data shows that this isn’t always the case. Findings revealed that Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Extreme Eau de Parfum (50ml) was at its highest price last Black Friday costing £56. If bought in August, shoppers could have saved 16% with it dropping to £47.29.

As for those with beauty items on their Christmas shopping list, skincare leads the way for Summer discounts. Products like the popular La Roche Posay Pure Vitamin C Serum will retail at around £6.99 throughout August compared to £19.95 in December. Shoppers who avoid last minute orders can save almost 70% here.

Other notable savings can be made on items such as UGG Boots. A pair of UGG’s classic mini’s, in the popular Chestnut colour, are likely to be around 40% cheaper this month with a price point of £110.99 compared to £185 during the week before Christmas.

Headphones and coffee machines will also see discounts in August with Galaxy Buds 2 Pro costing up to a third less than they will in December, and a Nespresso Inissia being picked up for just £77.45.

Katy Phillips, brand and communications manager at idealo comments: “We hope that our findings will help Brits with better planning of their Christmas shopping this year. Being aware of products and categories likely to be discounted makes it easier to decide when to buy what and spread out shopping between now and December to make paydays go further in the run up to the most expensive time of year.

“Whilst we’ve shared some of the biggest discounts anticipated for this month, I’d always recommend setting individual price alerts for items on a Christmas shopping list. This is a great way to set budgets for certain products, and being notified when they hit a desired price means shoppers can ensure they don’t waste a penny.

“Don’t gamble by waiting for upcoming sale events that might see products drop in price, do the research now by price comparing and checking price histories to make a more informed shopping plan that will save you money.”
