Govia Thameslink Railway Gets New Fare Cap Saving Customers Up to £124 a Week
- Govia Thameslink Railway introduces weekly fare cap
- Commuters could save up to £124 each week
- Scheme targets 30,000 keyGo smartcard users
Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has announced a new fare cap designed to save passengers money as they return to the office post-pandemic. This automatic weekly fare cap could result in savings of up to £124 each week for commuters.
GTR has rolled out this scheme for the 30,000 users of their keyGo smartcard service, which is used for pay-as-you-go journeys. This initiative ensures that travelers using the keyGo system will not pay more than the cost of a weekly season ticket for multiple trips between two stations within the keyGo area, covering most of GTR's network.
Katie Elliott at the Daily Express reported that once customers reach the weekly cap, they will not be charged for additional travel within that week. GTR, which operates Gatwick Express, Great Northern, Southern, and Thameslink services, believes this strategy will significantly benefit commuters who are uncertain about their travel frequency.
For example, GTR estimates that passengers making four return journeys from Brighton to London Victoria in a week could save up to £124, while those commuting from Bedford to London might save around £65.
Mark Pavlides, Interim Chief Customer Officer at GTR, commented, "Our simple tap-in, tap-out, pay-as-you-go keyGo system already guarantees our customers the cheapest walk-up fare of the day without the hassle of buying a ticket. The additional promise to never charge more than a weekly season ticket for travel between the same two stations means thousands of commuters returning to the office will never miss out on weekly season ticket deals, saving hundreds of pounds a week or month."
Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commented, "This fare cap is a welcome change for many commuters who have faced increased travel costs. It’s encouraging to see steps being taken to make daily travel more affordable."
