Should Adults Be Allowed to Order from Kids Menus?

Ask a Question

Should Adults be allowed to order from Kids menus?

A scene from After Life with Rickey Gervais got me thinking about this. So should adults be allowed to order for the kids menu? it's often cheaper and some of us have a small appetite and would benefit from ordering the smaller portion.

I know someone who was overweight and had the stomach operation. This meant she could only eat very small amounts or would become sick and bloated.

It would be hard to monitor but why the need to, people know how much they can or want to eat, surely it is better to have a kid's meal than an adult one and waste half of it.

Yes we’ve done this before without a problem in a “gastro pub”. The adult’s burgers were £15 and the kid’s ones were £6 and were definitely an adequate portion for us.

Absolutely. I know some places don't like it but the customer should be the priority. Sometimes people just don't want or can't manage a large meal.

Definitely should, I often use them as a starter or a small snack if there’s nothing on the main menu that takes my fancy. Don’t see why it makes any difference to the retailer who’s eating it

Of course. Why ever not? They are still making a sale and some people have smaller appetites.Wouldn't work for me though I like my grub too much lol.

Adults should definitely be allowed to order from the kids menu. Some adults don't have big appetites.

When my Mum was alive and we popped into The Harvester she always ordered a child's meal as it was plenty enough for her, never had a problem with this.

Why are there even separate menus? I've never once seen a "kids" menu that I'd let my kids choose anything off.

Jinky67 The kids menus are often aimed at food they would generally prefer, and are small portions with less of a profit margin for the restaurant. Often they have some kids of offer with a drink or small dessert too.

My child has often had stuff from the kids menu, nothing wrong with it 🙂

SamGoodship not my kids. Chicken nuggets are the devil's food yet every eating place thinks kids live on them. Cheap sausages with 2% meat? No thanks. No wonder we've got an obesity crisis in the UK when we teach our kids to eat this stuff.

Jinky67 my sons ordered NZ mussels when a friend's children were eating sausage, chips and beans. I fed them proper homemade food from babies, cooked all of it instead of hideous jars of slightly flavoured fillers. I agree with you. There's a lot wrong with the trash they put on children's menus, it's UHPF full of salt, sugar and preservatives with no nutritional value.

I think they should, my uncle was very thin and would only eat of a small portion of food so it was just easier getting him a meal off the children's menu as we knew it was enough. No point wasting a plate of food and wasting money.

My daughter owns a pub and serves children meals up to the age of 12. Also on a week day between 1 and 6 these are free with an adult meal. We have a couple times due to health reasons allowed an adult to have a kids meal but not sure why my daughter does not allow all the time. We do oap meals on Wednesday which are smaller.

I can see both points of view tbh. Restaurants need to make money and if they have everyone coming in ordering from the kids menu it cuts down on that and would take away tables where others would order adult meals.

Food is food. All comes from the same place and goes out the same place.

I see no problem with adults ordering a kids meal as long as it is as on the menu and paid for accordingly. You can’t start making adjustments to it. It’s designed for kids. The only exception would be if there are a lot of kids about that need feeding then they have the priority. You can always ask for a smaller portion and if they will reflect the price. No harm in asking.

Yes I really think they should be able to. Also there are people with medical problems that mean they are unable to eat an adult portion

I cant ear big meals - but as you say - some places a kids meal is chicken nuggets etc. I’m also quite happy to have just a starter and ask for it to be bought out with everyones main courses.

Can't we ditch the 'kids' and just have portion size options?

Usually it is specified for someone under a certain age, but no proving it really, children can look so different in age. We have an all you can eat place not too far from us who does it by height 🤨

I've heard that in some places they give the men the paid menus and females the ones without prices on, I'm shocked this is still allowed!

I must admit if I see an offer like a free kids meal with every adult meal I won't use that restaurant/cafe like Morrisons unless there is a different offer I can use. I don't see why adults without kids should be subsidising adults with kids. Of course recently Morrisons have had some good offers on like breakfast deals and 2 adult meals and 2 hot drinks for £10 which was a great deal and used it but now we are back to no offers except free kids meals I won't use them again and this has a knock on effect to not going to Morrisons so often. Of course if it was an offer that benefitted my circumstances I would use it at the expense of others who would be subsidising it.

I passed a hairdressers that did men's hair cuts and it was something like £12 for men or £8 for OAPs but on one day a week I think it was Wednesday it was £8 for everyone. There is no way I would pay £12 I would definitely go on a Wednesday if I went there.

Personally I think I should have the right to have a free child's meal with my adult meal at Morrisons if I want it I shouldn't be excluded from the offer just because I don't have kids and I certainly think anyone should have the right to order a child's meal if they are paying for it and want a smaller meal.

I went shopping yesterday at Taunton and just wanted a light meal and it was a breakfast bag and hot drink which I think was £4.32 but it allows for free refills of the drink and so I had a Capuchinno, Decaf Mocha and then finished on a Hot Chocolate. So I used to free refills to 2 times. Of course that means people who don't refill are subsidising my purchase to a degree or at least I am far less profitable to Wetherspoons than they are.

yes I think you should. Sometimes if a parent orders for a child and the kid doesn't eat it the parents would finish it off. Makes no different. Paying for the portion. Same with clothes. If it fits and cheaper and saves tailoring or cost. I see it a far more conscious of the environment than waste.

Yes, definitely. A member of our family had an operation on their stomach meaning they cannot have large meals. They can't even have a drink with their meal, all has to be done seperatly.

Yes I think you should be able to order from kids menu. The meals are much cheaper and more affordable to the pocket, in this time of everything being so expensive a cheaper meal is acceptable and people shouldn’t be embarrassed either your still paying for a meal your not getting it free.

I always order from a kids menu if I’m allowed because I just can’t eat a full adult meal so I either order small or share with hubby or ask for a box and take food home, hate food waste and to be honest I’ve seen lots of children eat more than me

Interesting, I love a chicken nugget happy meal, and will get that for myself no problem, but I have not done it in a sit down restaurant, not sure why, there have been a few times when I would have liked to but felt abit ackward, I guess I assumed it would be a little frowned upon? On the other hand there have also been times when I have ordered adult but the portions are somewhat child size🤣

My wife always orders from the kids same, she's not a big eater, it's not about cost but waste, what's the point of ordering an adult meal of you only going to eat half of it

Yes as most people said the likes of elderly and people with smaller appetites ordering from a big menu wouldn't be able to finish a big meal so costing the smaller eaters extra moñey and a waste of food and the suggestion of half a large meal for half the price takes a lot of people have the choice as other adults or order. From kids menu wouldn't and shouldnt affect the person to feel uncomfortable and put them of the experience of eating out.

The whole eating out experience needs revamped. A simple " fish and chips " should be sold by weight as well as calorie content

You should be able to order a small, medium or large adult meal according to your preferences that day. Along with differences in price you could read the differences in calories too. I had maggots in my outside bin recently. Yo combat this we have purchased a small indoor food Compost bin. I was shocked at the amount of food waste. We are not wasting now. I work in food production.
