Ex Flight Attendant Warns about Ordering Coffee on a Flight

In the News

Most people flying to their holiday destination opt for buying a drink on the plane

There is no problem buying canned drinks, but according to this ex flight assistant you should avoid coffee and tea served from pots

He says the reason is because they have to empty coffee pot dregs down the toilet as they dont have a sink or drain to dispose of them and this means the pot can come in close vicinity to the toilet which is a potential health hazard

Even when you have the coffee or tea already in the cups and they just add hot water there is another health hazard

According to the assistant these water holding tanks are rarely cleaned so are prone to bacteria or worse

So if you fancy a hot drink during your flight it might be better to take your own flask , but remember it musn't be more than 100 ml 😀

Won't stop me. Not great but it's a plane and there's limited space on it.

Maybe I’m wrong but I am sure I have seen sinks on plane where they prepare food. They have them in the toilets. I am flying on Saturday, I will see if I can see one.

Worse yet it might land in yer lap unless you're in business class and have loads of arm room.I never bother with hot drinks cos I seldom drink a whole cup and then I'm left safe guarding the cup for what seems like an eternity.

MelissaLee1 yes space is a problem M, thats why some airlines give you cups with a lid and spout to suck the coffee out

I've never purchased a drink on a plane, I take my own bottle of water, that does me fine

I can’t think that would be allowed. It’s unhygienic. Surely they would empty coffee grounds or teabags into a bin bag and hot water tanks would have to be cleaned or they could make someone very unwell. To serve that amount of people they would get sued if something happened.

JLouM I suppose joe public doesn't see everything that goes on in the galley J, they always have the curtains drawn across anyway

I expect different airlines have different standards of hygiene ,possibly European airlines are stricter than others

Heres something i copied from google, while not referring to hygiene they are rated as the lowest for safety

Did you know the dirtiest place on the plane is not the toilet as staff do clean them regularly, its the headrests

While airlineratings.com/ does not officially release rankings for the least-safe airlines, the following carriers featured at the bottom of the list with one-star rankings: Nepal Airlines (Nepal), Airblue (Pakistan), Sriwijaya Air (Indonesia), Blue Wing (Suriname), Pakistan International Airlines and Air Algerie

telmel I haven’t actually flown for years but my sister has quite a lot. She opts for a meal deal from airport to take with her. Yes I can imagine the seats are dirty with so many people using them but it’s public transport same as a train. I expect to get dirty travelling but you can always wear the right clothes for that and then put them in the wash.
