Finally Succumbed to Watching the Crown on Netflix

Other

Although I love history, I am not so much into the recent stuff. However, I began watching and was hooked almost immediately.

What struck me most was the uncanny resemblance to the stuff going on now in the RF. Two sisters, one sensible and dutiful, the other petulant and jealous reflects what I see in brothers WIlliam and Harry. Also the behaviour of Harry is very similar to that of Edward VIII. To the extent of Harry and Megan in effect selling themselves just as Edward and Wallis Simpson did, only difference being Edward was booted out of the RF and Harry and Megan chose to go. And as for Winston Churchill .....words fail me!

Although I realise that history isn't everyone's favourite subject, the success of historical series cannot be denied. Downton Abbey, Vikings, The Last Kingdom, Outlander, Medici, The Borgias to name but a few. I am surprised no enterprising TV producer has not run with this and come up with a series of The Crown, starting with William the Conqueror right the way through to Victoria and the reigns of her son and grandsons.

There are so many amazing royal stories, unbelievable but true, and it would be great for older kids seriously learning history at school.

Rather than start a new topic (we all have heard enough about that!) Will add to this one.

Did anyone see all the chat about Harry and Meghan on GMB? I was surprised to hear Paul Burrell saying Harry and William would heal their rift. I 'm not so sure. Their great grandfather and his brother never reunited and the story is almost the same, Edward left the RF for the woman he loved and they remained together until death did them part.

In these days of divorce it may not be same for Harry as he may decide it was a mistake to marry Meghan or he may remain under her influence for the rest of his life.

The similarities are astounding.

Imnotcheap sorry to be ignorant but what is the significance of York? Did you see or learn something there?

I have always been a Royalist and studying the history of the monarchy has been a passion. However, since watching this programme I have come to the conclusion that they are nearly all self entitled snobs who don't give a jot for the common folk only in maintaining their life style and status. Never thought I would say it but I believe it is time for them to go as they are embarrassing to the UK with scandal after scandal, which proves they really are no better than us plebs!

Imnotcheap so sorry, I can see my post does not make clear who I was talking about and could easily be applied to Edward IV and Elizabeth of York who as a commoner got a lot of stick when they married. But also him and his brother the Duke of Clarence, who ended up being executed by drowning in a barrel of malmsey wine!

The war of the roses is a tremendous story......you couldn't make it up!

I wish nothing but happiness for both Harry and Meghan. The msm have a lot to answer for. As do the people who blindly beleive everything printed by the likes of The Scum, The daily fail and the express. The hate generated by the msm was and is astoudning.

Ah, but my remarks are based on documented evidence. You don't say if you have watched the crown and I have no idea of your age but the similarities are astounding.

Edward tried for years to come back into the fold (but his previous dealings with the Nazis and Hitler forbade this) and I think there will come a day when Harry will want to 'come home' because as they say blood is thicker than water and Meghan will not be able to fill the void completely.

Lynibis I have no interest in The Crown. I also dont believe everything written or said by the msm. I think the hate that has been blasted at both Harry and Meghan has been unjust and uncalled for. He asked the media to stop but they continued...he spoke about his mental health ..and he was mocked for it. They both have done what best for them and their family. The press here are toxic and sadly the british public seems to feed off it.

SarahPrice I am afraid that the price of celebrity is often being hounded by the press in all spheres, film, sport, political. The very existence of royalty offers a glimpse of a lifestyle the majority can never aspire to. It is natural to want to know about it.

I too object to the way news is put out there but I guess that's the price of democracy.

Personally I have never bought a newspaper, let alone a celebrity magazine preferring my news to be accurate.

I have no respect for any of the RF any more. If they cannot be above scandal and behave responsibly then they should not be considered our betters, superiors or people we should respect and look up to.

Divorces galore, sex parties, drug taking, extravagance, hypocrisy, lies, the list is endless and that is why I think of them as no better than any of their subjects they have such disdain for.

I am loathe to keep starting new topics so I am adding to this one rather than clog up chat or move it on too quickly.

I am still binge watching this and an episode yesterday covered the Aberfan disaster, arguably the worst non terrorist disaster this country has suffered in living memory.

I remember it well as I was 13 at the time and remember how badly it affected me.

The programme went into more detail and I was amazed at the Queen's response when asked if she would visit: 'The Crown visits hospitals, not accidents'. She was asked again a couple of days later with same response and it was only when the newspapers began to criticise that she finally went.
