Good News concerning High Blood Pressure

In the News

For most people the cause of high blood pressure is unknown and the condition requires lifelong treatment with drugs

Not only that it can lead to other conditions

But for one in 20 people it is caused by aldosterone, a steroid hormone produced by tiny nodules in the adrenal glands just above the kidneys

The hormone causes salt to be retained in the body, driving up blood pressure.

There is now a new test that only takes 10 minutes and can detect and cure high blood pressure in most cases

It involves using an injection of radioactive dye which only sticks to the aldosterone-producing nodules, followed up by a CT scan

The nodules glow for a while from the dye revealing the problem

If this is happening to just one adrenal gland they can be removed through keyhole surgery and as we have 2 adrenal glands, and we only need one, it can be removed, and restoring our blood pressure back to normal

With the old method 99 per cent of cases are never diagnosed because of the difficulty and unavailability of tests

Blood pressure affects many people throughout the world , a third of adults in the UK , and complications can lead to more serious consequences , so this is fantastic news and a positive we could all do with in the present climate

Pjran Most with hypertension will not need it (so won't be offered it) This is not some "miracle cure" as implied, just an expensive diagnosis aid, followed (if necessary) with keyhole surgery.

Only about 5% of people who suffer hypertension can be helped with this (it's those whose high blood pressure is caused by an aldosterone imbalance). The other 95% will still require medication and hopefully help themselves; eating, drinking and excercising sensibly are just three ways.* That will be a great disappointment to many pot bellied, multi-chinned individuals. One of whom shouldn't go offering the loan of his b/p measuring gizmo to others who don't need it. He shouldn't let it out of his sight.

*Anger and stress management - can help tremendously too.😀
