What's the Best Time to Stop Wishing Others 'Happy New Year'?

Ask a Question

My question is when is there a cut off point for people to stop wishing other people a happy new year?.

To be honest I wouldn't mind if no one said it at all! I get a bit fed up with people calling out and I am obliged to answer in the same vein. I think the next day is enough, after that it's not necessary.

For the first few days, I think it's OK but weeks later it seems a bit unnecessary.

It depends, I normally say it on the first day back at work, so this year it was a lot later as I returned to work on the 9th as I like to say Happy New Year to colleagues.

Yes for the 1st week but don't bother after as by then I would of see the people that are most close to me

I like to throw it into conversations at random times throughout the year, just to confuse / irritate/ bemuse people.

didbygraham that's exactly the sort of thing my husband does! He didn't see one of his friends till summertime and he picked him up from the train station and said Happy New Year!

if it’s someone I’ve not seen since 2022, I’m likely to still say it throughout this month

As a rule of thumb I never start a conversation with "Happy New Year " (except perhaps on New Years Day ). But if they do I respond likewise . No issue with it TBH .

People are still doing it now, as I haven’t seen them since last year. It doesn’t bother me but I’m never first to say it.

I stopped say it on New Year's Day. On Monday a neighbour said to me 'Happy New Year'! as I was walking past their home. I smiled at them.
