Jilted Brides Must Return Engagement Rings to Exes Judge Rules, is This Right ?

In the News

When you get engaged is the ring a conditional gift or or just a gift ?

Does the ring then belong to the future bride or should it be returned if things turn sour ?

Well a judge in Massachusetts in the US has ruled the ring must be returned to the person who purchased it

Previously the law required courts to try to identify who was to blame for the relationship ending for the ownership to be verified

This case was a bit complicated as the groom had prostate cancer and he decided to end the relationship, but not just for this reason

Things got more complicated when he found her messaging another man , so this weighed towards the decision to end the relationship

I don't know if each state in the US would have their own law on this , if they do it would then depend where you lived

You see in movies for example where a relationship ends the woman is normally seen handing back the wedding ring , not normally the engagement ring though, at least not that i have noticed

Do you think it should be law or just a moral obligation to return the ring if this ruling came to the UK ?

Well it's a commitment so if its not going to happen then I think the right thing to do is give it back now I think it's a different story if they were married she should be able to keep engagement ring and wedding ring

You would think most people wouldn't want the engagement ring if the relationship has broken down. I think case by case makes the most sense really.

jms19 I think the court there ruled it this way to avoid costly court cases as they had to investigate each on its own merit. Now its just one ruling on who purchased it owns it

Of course if it is an amicable split then they could keep the ring if agreed

I guess it would depend on how the engagement ended, if he cheated absolutely not, if she cheated then definitely should be returned

Yes, she should return the ring in every instance

I blame beyonce for all this, she is the one insisting to put a ring on it 😀

To be fair would you want to kept it? I wouldn't. I meant why would you want to be reminded of something that happened even though it was a gift and it's yours
