Would You Take the Kids out of School for a Holiday?

Ask a Question

Is it wrong to take kids on holiday during school terms?

Fines are rising by £20 in August to address attendance issues. Is this unfair to families who can't afford peak season prices? 🤔🏖️

Luckily my daughter is a long time past that age.

In early years education I wouldn't say it mattered but I think aa they get older children should be in school. Some families cannot afford to take their children on holiday unless they go in term time as the prices are so expensive...

Only the other Tuesday I was supporting & at the hairdresser's when this subject came up..

The hairdresser was telling someone she was taking her 2 children, one out of primary & the older one out of secondary as she was saving over a thousand pounds on the holiday & the fines amounted to a lot less..

It's time the companies stopped penalising the families & lowered their prices, this has gone on since our daughter was in primary & she is 25 now!

I think each child should be allowed one weeks holidays per school year, either that or stop the holiday companies putting their prices up by ridiculous amounts

I've personally never taken my children out of school, but I agree with the other poster who says each family should be allowed a week each. The price differences between term time holidays and those in school holidays is ridiculous - even when I looked at going away in a caravan it was over 4 times more expensive ☹️

My children are now past that age but we did take them out of school for holidays years ago. Children learn more on these holidays than 2 weeks in a classroom. They learn about other cultures. Languages and history. Mine used to write a diary about their adventures. I think it is very wrong to fine families as a parent we should be allowed to decide what is best for our children.

I don’t think it’s wrong at all really unless the child is in an important time of the year in terms of their education.

Is it fair for less fortunate children to never get to travel or experience different cultures. I think that’s worse than them missing a week or two of school

Is it not a fact that ALL schooltime is important and I am sure if you had no school with which to send your children you may be the first to complain is it not time that we all

played by the rules instead of trying to find ways around them.

Fitchet i don’t believe it is a fact that all school time is important if i’m honest no.

Secondly i have no children and thirdly the point about there being no school is completely irrelevant.

My main argument is i believe travel is very important in terms of learning life lessons and so i think at certain times of the school year it would be fine for kids to miss a week or two.

Either that or the government should stop airlines and holiday companies upping their prices so much that a summer holiday becomes out of reach for a lot of families.

We also book our holidays when the kids are off school otherwise it would cost a fortune in fines, the best way to book for good prices is to book way in advance

martinlufc5637 The sad thing is that it's usually cheaper to pay the fines than it is to go during school hols....

Hell no, it’s not wrong no, is it right to Capitalise on Children or Families, no it not.

Doesn't matter whether who can afford it or not, segregation here we come again.

Sick of any Government allowing this to happen to Capitalise on kids and parents.

You might as well set up poor queue here and well off queue here hang on a minute they already do exist, it VIP Business Class and Economy's Isn’t that segregation.

Would you do that on Race, but they happily do it on wealth.

Lets face it you are all born in this Country naked, educated, work for a living (all depends) and then die, if you can’t enjoy your wealth when you are dead you might as well enjoy it now and learn from it and get plenty of vitamin B12, because all the Government do is take, take, from you.

And what ever the fine is, I am sure it will still work out cheaper than a half term holiday in August.

Tell them it’s a Student’s training Day 😃and for those kids attendance that are zero pay more attention on them because there is something wrong and they need the help and the support.

How about bringing these School Camps back help the Parents out but not at ridicules cost during the Half term.

I don't see why it would be much of an issue if it was only a week in the year unless it was during exams or lead up to then I would get why they want everyone in. It's so much cheaper during the term it's so wrong that it costs more than double in holiday times.

Shame I don’t have children, however I would knock a few days here or there to save thousands if I did. Overall you’d be better off paying fine and we all know towards the end of term they won’t miss .

If I could get the time off work myself yes. I work in a school so can't get away with term time holidays sadly. It's ridiculous that we are stung for being on holiday during school holidays

If my child had an operation or caught chicken pox or something the school would not bat an eye out about missing school time but involve a plane etc and they are angry. Children can so easily catch up on missing work.

The teachers unfortunately have to stay at school all termtime so have to adhere to the rules so cannot go on cheaper term time holidays.

Obviously, school is important but I would say family time is more important. Making great memories & having experiences together. Some people can't get time off work at certain times. Having a happy child & a strong family connection will do more good for them in everyway possible. x x

I used to take mine out of school during term time because it was so much cheaper plus the weather was better for the children, not too hot. This was before fines were given.
