If you’ve made it this far you’ve lucked out - you’ve read the concise, snappy version of the update above and now you lucky, lucky person - you get my long, rambling update too!
This new feature came about after listening to member feedback and removing awarding points for liking posts. Some people felt giving points for likes meant you couldn’t trust the likes on Latest Deals as they were incentivised by points rather than just on the merit of the deal itself. Whilst we don’t think all members were treating likes this way, it seemed a fair criticism so we wanted to trial removing the points.
The trial succeeded in that people no longer like just for points but has had the unfortunate side effect of reducing the number of posts on Latest Deals that get likes. That’s not ideal as we need everyone to say what they like to bring the top deals up to the homepage! However, the whole concept of Latest Deals is about rewarding members for their efforts so it didn’t sit well with us that we’d just removed a method of earning points that many members were using legitimately.
So, we hatched a plan and have created a new way to rate deals - good or bad - and we reward you with points for doing so. In fact, you can actually earn up to 4 times more points with this system than you could before! However, with great points comes great responsibility and so we’ve implemented a few things to try and encourage people to use the new rating system legitimately. As with all the ways of earning points on Latest Deals, please do use it as its intended - to reward people for genuine, useful contributions. We have systems in place to detect abuse but I really, really don’t want to have to use them!
I’d imagine there will be some questions and I’m very happy to jump in and answer.
Anticipated Frequently Asked Questions!
Do you get the same number of points for rating a deal good or bad?
Yep!
How many points can I earn?
Every 6 hours you’re able to earn 25 points.
What happens after I’ve earned my points?
You can carry on rating for fun! It’s a great way to discover newly shared deals before anyone else.
Can you see how many “dislikes” a deal has?
No. Our current view is that dislikes aren’t very productive or helpful. We always encourage people to leave comments with constructive criticism of deals as we find this helps the original poster improve their deal hunting and guides other members too. Interestingly, Youtube seems to share our views as its just announced it’s removing the “dislike” count on their videos! We get this isn't clear cut and that there are pros and cons for both approaches. The dislikes could however have an impact on whether or not a deal reaches the homepage popular section, helping to filter out the good from the mediocre
How do I get started?
Download the latest version of the Latest Deals app from your app store press “Rate”
Thanks Kelsey! I’m really looking forward to this new and exciting way to rate deals.
Here are some screenshots of it in action —
Thanks for creating new system much appreciated I don’t understand I do have app what she’ll I press to give likes to a deal please ?I
Morning Jasmine111
You'll need to update to the latest version of the app via the App Store. It's only available if you have an iPhone or iPad at the moment.
Once updated, you'll see a new yellow button in the top right hand side of the screen labeled "RATE"
Kelsey Thanks I have iphone here’s pic what she’ll do after please because most of time I use app
Jasmine111 Just tap the "RATE" button and you should be good to go! (If it all works! )
So instead of "click " to like to garner points - its now "swipe" to like (or dislike) to garner points ? Or am i missing something ?
This is an improvement ?. A poor deal could be "disliked" many times but this would not show up (only "likes" ) . Therefore it will have no effect on discouraging members from posting their usual 3 "non deals " a day ?
Surely points should only be awarded for useful contributions to the site - Not for those who "game" the points system ? I'll pass .
Golfforall I just said that’s doesn’t mean we play for points please don’t get me wrong as I never bothered points I still have my Amazon voucher didn’t use yet. I hope it’s clear will edit my above comment
Jasmine111 Just commenting on the "rate idea" in general - not on your comment .
Hi Golfforall Thank you for your feedback! I'm determined I'll build something you like one day! I just wanted to explain a bit more about the rationale and purpose of this new feature:
- We want to encourage more people to voice their opinion on a deal. This is essential for Latest Deals to work - with popular deals rising to the top (and quickly burying any non-deals!)
- We were keen to bring back the reward we previously removed. It takes time and effort to rate a deal. I appreciate that some (like me ) may do it for fun but we want a broader spectrum of people to get involved and so a small reward seems like a fair exchange for a genuine opinion.
- We keep track of if a deal is disliked. We can use this to help improve our system of ranking deals (i.e. deciding what shows up on the homepage). So whilst we may not display the number of dislikes, it can impact how visible the deal is.
I appreciate there are still some wider concerns about the points system as a whole. We’re always listening to feedback and keen to improve things. The intention of this new (and, in my incredibly bias opinion, quite exciting!) update is to improve aspects of Latest Deals. I believe it was a topic of yours, relatively recently, that highlighted disappointment that a deal you’d shared hadn’t garnered more interest. Hopefully this new feature will encourage people to explore the newest deals and allow the best to reach a wider audience.
We certainly haven’t finished tweaking/changing things but I think the sharing of deals and the points rewarded for doing so is a topic in it’s own right and so I’d ask that any further discussion on that subject is in a dedicated or more suitable topic than this one. I’m hoping in here we can focus on likes/dislikes/feedback of this specific rating feature so that we can get it running as smoothly and enjoyably as possible!
Kelsey When click to "like " points were removed the "liking" went down . Proof positive that members were just clicking at random (or sheeplike at best) for 25 points a day .
As it appears now , instead of clicking randomly 5 times a day for their 25 points , members can "swipe" randomly 20 times a day ( in 4 chunks ) to garner 100 points a day .
Hopefully in the future you might consider using the like/dislike data gathered (but not displayed) to reward members posting good deals . Say 50 points for the initial deal post then bonuses for reaching certain thresholds of "likes- dislikes" . This would be between the member and the site (not openly displayed) and perhaps encourage members to post "real deals" instead of the 3 x 20 second "click and paste " deals a day many currently post .
Golfforall Hey
Yep - so I think some people were liking randomly for points and it's true to say that those people will have undoubtedly stopped! I think there's also a group of people that liked legitimately for points and unfortunately we've lost those. These are the ones we're hoping to bring back!
It's true someone could randomly like/dislike 25 deals a day. However, we've tried to design the new system in such a way that you might as well make a decision as to whether it's good or bad. Under the previous system you could logon to LD and very quickly, with no limit, like the first deals you came across willy-nilly. The new system is time-limited. You've got to see the screen for a certain amount of time before you can cast your vote. The hope is most people will decide that, actually, given that limitation they may as well make a conscious decision. It's more interesting and enjoyable that way.
For those that really want to just randomly like/dislike stuff we have systems in place to detect consistent abuse and can disable their ability to earn points via this method. It's not an infallible system but the effort required to "beat" it doesn't really match the reward!
That's a great idea using the information to reward members for great deals. That's going into my little notebook
PS. Not related to this conversation or you personally I have removed some off-topic comments from this post. Please do reach out via the contact form (you can ask it to be forwarded to me if you want) so we can review and respond accordingly. Thanks!
Kelsey "You've got to see the screen for a certain amount of time before you can cast your vote". Good idea, but could it be improved by restricting the ability to vote to only those who have clicked through to actually examine the deal? I don't know whether the site gets revenue for "click throughs" (on certain sites) but if it does this could be beneficial to all.
Kelsey Thanks for explaining further . Hopefully the safeguards you have built in will deter many "so called " members from abusing the site ? I guess the "proof of the pudding " will be apparent once you gather the data .
Best of luck ! Thanks for replying - I honestly hope it goes well as you envisage .
And be comfortable in knowing we can easily ignore the children who try to disrupt posts such as this .
Just figured this out ... dam am all ways last to know . Great idea thanks you . Keep good work coming xx
This sounds like an interesting new feature, but as I only use LD on the website I can't try it out.
Sounds good, giving a fair chance to all deals but when will it be on the website, or is the long term way forward to only be app and FB?
Hey angelik and lilyflower
The function is exclusive to our app for now but there's no theoretical reason we can't add it to the website later
Latest deals strikes again. Just when you think how good latest deals is and it's near impossible to improve anymore and you come along and improve the website/app even more.
I love how you put something out there, you listen and you go about improving. Keep up the good work and on improving perfection.
I just downloaded the app on my iPad to give it a go and it seems to be working well for me. I like getting to see some deals I might not have seen before. Looking forward to it being available on android though as that’s the device I use the most.
Kelsey I was just wondering how this works with “likes” that we’ve manually given to things we saw on the site outside of the rating system? I’ve just rated a few more products (using my android device this time and it works just as well as it does on my iPad so that’s great!) and noticed I’ve been asked to rate several of the same items I’d manually liked already. Is this a bug, since it’s allowing me to like the same thing a second time?
It looks like a great way to earn more points I can't use the apps unfortunately due to having an old Samsung but who knows I may get a new phone in the future
I seldom carry my mobile phone out of doors and only then when absolutely necessary. I leave the house to escape technology and so I won't be downloading or using the phone app but it's a great idea for all who do none the less.
Just bumping this up as we've now released this on Android too!
Download the Latest Deals app for Android
It may take a little while for the update to appear in your Play Store but it should be making it's way to you now!
Hi, unfortunately this isn't available via the website yet.
It is available via Apple and Android tablets if you happen to own either of those.
If you have a laptop that can run apps (I believe some newer windows and mac laptops can do that now!) you could earn them that way.
We'll definitely look to add it as a feature to the website in the future
I like the idea, unfortunately I have only got a tablet , so look forward to it being rolled out
beccatavender you may still be able to get the Latest Deals app on your tablet. Have a look on the App Store for your tablet.
sounds like a cool new feature, going to try it out now, i do agree its not all about points though
Just tried it out. It’s ok. Always grateful that LD are giving people opportunities to earn points
So, can you only earn points by voting on the 25 deals selected for you to view?
How are these deals selected?
Tom not sure how many deals are posted a day, but the most I will see using this method is 100. Will those posts not have an advantage in boosting them so they are more visible whilst others may languish as a consequence?
gerrykelly25 Morning Just to chime in that every person will get 25 random deals from the entire pool of deals that have been shared that day. So, theoretically, there should be an even chance of every deal popping up for everyone!
I can confirm it now works on the Android although I had to go and force it to update but thats not a big issue. Would much rather do this on the web site though as dont really use the app that much. Could do with an option for just OK - not good enough to really like it but not bad enough to dislike it (mainly because the deal is of no interest to me so I have no idea of its good or not) like a Meh button?
