Supermarket Prices 2022 Analysis

Latest Deals

Hello Deal Hunters!

Using the Latest Deals supermarket price comparison tool, we track the online prices of the 20 most-commonly bought products at a range of supermarkets (the cheapest option of each product of the same size).

Here you can see the price changes at

  • Aldi
  • ASDA
  • Iceland
  • Morrisons
  • Sainsbury's
  • Tesco
  • Waitrose

Each month we will be sharing a review of the price changes we find. This may be helpful for Deal Hunters as it informs you as to which supermarket may be increasing prices the most.

Here it is for 2022:

FAQs

  • What about Lidl, Co-Op, Savers, Poundland etc.?

We don't track these places at present. We may do in future.

  • What products do you track?

We don't want to say exactly what products for a variety of reasons, but it is a common basket of goods that form the 20 most bought products. We find the cheapest available option for the same size.

  • Iceland seems wrong, it's not that expensive

Iceland is a unique supermarket because it doesn't sell much of it's own brand goods. Basic items, such as those we tend to collect data on, tend to be more expensive at Iceland. Iceland does sell other items, such as large packs of frozen meat, at cheaper prices than other supermarkets - however we don't necessarily track all those product prices for the purposes of this.

  • How can I compare prices myself?

Sainsbury's is cheaper than I expected, I've been using the smartshop recently with gives you personalised lower prices on certain items. It's been great for getting items like butter which have increased so much in the last year.

Sainsbury's is cheaper than it used to be but if I'm honest the quality isn't as good as it once was.

Without knowing the items in the list and which items you have used for the comparison from each supermarket and the price its very difficult to judge this price comparison. Also in that zoomed in section you list the supermarkets alphabetically but surely for clarity it should be listed in value in descending order as it gives an unfair position to Aldi and Asda on first impressions.

I seem to remember looking at Which's value comparison and it was awful and seemed poorly judged in the detail and without knowing the full details the same could be true here.

Also Lidl and M&S should be on there.

Also its worth pointing out such comparisons can give a very false impression of value as for example Lidl and Aldi while competitive for staple items have very few promotional discounts. If I go into Tesco I may find many half price deals so I can try new food I haven't tried before and the same is true of Sainsburys, Asda and Morrisons where there are promotions on but Lidl and Aldi do not do such promotions typically and only have very small discount promotions at best.

Then of course some supermarkets have loyalty schemes like Tesco clubcard where there is a cheaper clubcard price I'd want to know that clubcard prices are used for comparison as clubcards are free anyway and if there was points for shopping there I would factor that into the final price of the basket for fairness.

Personally I'm not interested in any big brand products being used in such a comparison and I would never want to see an own brand product compared in price to a big brand which I saw on a Which comparison which completely destroys the credibility of the price comparison to me.
