BBC TV Licence Price Hike: Eligibility for FREE or Discounted Rates

Image
  • TV licence fee to rise to £169.50 from 1st August
  • Over 75s with Pension Credit can get a free licence
  • Severely visually impaired individuals can receive a 50% discount

The cost of a BBC TV licence is set to increase to £169.50 starting August 1st. However, there are provisions for certain groups to receive the licence at no cost or at a reduced rate. Those aged over 75 and in receipt of Pension Credit are eligible for a free TV licence, while individuals with severe visual impairments can get a 50% discount.

Levi Winchester reported in the Mirror that the price adjustment is the first in two years. It's important for eligible groups to claim these benefits to ensure they aren't paying more than necessary.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commented, “With the cost of living on the rise, it's vital to make use of available discounts and exemptions, especially for essential services like the TV licence.”

Last year 500,000 homes cancelled their TV license and it could be more than that this year. I've not had a TV license for about 7 years I think and don't miss it at all. Admittedly though my mother lives nearby and if there is anything on the BBC I want to watch I watch it there. Currently that is 'Impossible' repeats and 'The Wheel'. I can still use the BBC website and BBC radio legally. I personally don't want to support the BBC I think its a grossly inefficient organisation and feel its news services are poor nowadays. A lot of the BBC license fee is just to pay pension shortfalls and not actually making programs.

Just been reading that the BBC paid John McEnroe £200k for working the 2 weeks of Wimbledon and that wasn't an exclusive contract he was still being paid to do some US channel commentary. It's absolute madness how much money the BBC wastes. I did watch a bit of Wimbledon at my mothers house as well and the Euros.

Stoie Are you the spelling police? BonzoBanana has made such a great point! I haven't had a licence in over ten years either. The BBC needs scrapping!

Hobbes It's not so much scrapping it, it is more a reduction in income as less and less homes pay for it. It will be forced to downsize. Personally I think the BBC are rubbish and grossly inefficient but all that really matters is how many people pay for it which seems to be reducing at a huge rate.

HazelLockwood You can watch channels but you can't watch any live tv as its being broadcast.

HazelLockwood You can use their streaming services completely legally but not live channels. It's incredibly unfair such channels are funded by advertising and there shouldn't be a restriction on access to them but there is.
