DWP Changes Allow Universal Credit Claimants to Apply for £1,000 Extra
- Universal Credit households can now access up to £1,000 more in mortgage support
- Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) helps pay interest on home loans
- The loan is only repaid if you sell your home or pass away
Thousands of Universal Credit claimants can now get up to £1,000 extra mortgage support, thanks to changes by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) scheme provides a loan to help cover interest payments on home loans for those on Universal Credit or other benefits.
The loan applies to mortgages of up to £200,000 for Universal Credit claimants, with repayments only required if you sell your home or pass away. This change aims to prevent households from defaulting on their mortgages during financial hardship.

I thought I'd left a comment previously about this but it seems to have disappeared. Perhaps I forgot to click the 'post' button. However how is there £1000 more in support I can't see that anywhere else? Seems such a weird amount £1000 when everyone's mortgage is different with different outstanding amounts and nothing in the formula they give would indicate a clean upgrade of £1000. Is there a link to somewhere giving more information on this £1000 upgrade?
