Should We Ban Cars on School Roads?
Ask a Question
Should we ban cars parking on roads where there is a school?
'school streets' have been put in place in parts of Reading and London meaning cars can't go down there during school drop off and pick up times and other councils are considering it.
Jackscot It's bad by ours too, cars are always parking fully on the pavement to avoid the yellow lines, it makes it more dangerous as they are pulling up next to kids walking in
They already have this ban in my area. They don’t need to use cars as some of these kids only live 5-10 mins walk away. Most schools are accessible by bus. Kids ride the buses for free so it’s more financially viable than driving
It's a issue here but by the people who live on the street I don't drive myself so that doesn't bother me but the way these parents act because they are in a rush to get to work it's madness I've seen 4 verbal issues because they can't get through my daughter was nearly knocked over because she came on to the pavement to turn around
Leannexxx Totally agree with you. I live in a village and to my mind if you live in the village you go to the village primary school. This also means you can walk there. It’s not a big village. But because it’s a good school children come from further a field and this is where it is wrong.
eyeballkerry well when I moved to where I am it's was a village now it's a high street that's what they say anyway most of the school places are off your post code now and if you can't get in the school you want then they go well out of the area
Leannexxx The system has fallen apart, mainly due to people driving everywhere now. When was younger I walked to both my prima school and secondary school. My secondary school was a fair distance which did not have a bus route.
The problem where we are people park in the nearest shop and estates for one of schools they really any the local residents
My sons school is on a main road. If it got road works on it causes havoc on surrounded main roads. So it wouldn't work here, next to school is a council run sports centre will lots of parking which school has agreement with to use car park. Last week someone nearly hit my car trying to go out entrance as I was going in madness
There should be a ban as cars are half parked on the pavement. Also they rush from the local shopping center to get to the school and they park half an hour early. I see this happen most days. I feel sorry for the lollipop person as it’s a nightmare.
Another issue is, especially this time of year, is the people doing the school pick up, sitting in their cars with the engines running creating a big cloud of pollution for the children to walk into!
I think real solutions should be found rather than just banning the cars. I used to have to go straight to work from the school run. If I wouldn’t have been able to park near the school and couldn’t get to work on time i would have lost wages or my job. Now I help my grandkids with the school run but am disabled so i have to be able to park close as i cannot walk far.
Hard to say, i’m not a parent and i do find driving near schools, at peak times, to be very stressful. However i also accept that there is times when there isn’t anywhere else to park etc.
I used to live on a road by a school and that was frustrating cause people would block the drive
Yes yes yes!! They are a big nuisance as they just park anywhere with no regard to neighbours or other road users.
I had to walk to and from school and I can remember having to wear the reflectors on my coat during the foggy mornings. We had to wear wellingtons in the snow, now they close the schools, they have never had it so good!!!
Definitely. The primary I stay next to has become a car free zone at pick and drop off but residents still have access
Most schools were built on housing estates that the catchment residents were the only pupils but when this was changed it caused nightmares on not only the road the school is on but all adjacent roads to it, as parents have no consideration for other road users and park anywhere they can including on paths and road junction corners.
A difficult one - residents need parking, but it's some parents who park dangerously whilst dropping off children and it's some drivers who think it's great to race on residental streets at school times.
Banning is well and good, but what about residents?
Banning is all well and good but unless there is regular enforcement then there is no point. The only way it would work is with lots of cameras automatically issuing fines, which is great but most local councillors are scared to vote for such measures.
My wife takes our son to school and I fetch him in the afternoon, but I think they should be banned from places around the school. I suppose we are lucky we have places to park cars if its raining as this is when more cars are about.
Don't get me started on this issue.....it's ridiculous at my daughter's school, they park on the pavement so you have to walk on the road, I've had loads of arguments with these drivers, there should be a total ban within a quarter of a mile
My mum paid thousands for a drive because both me and my dad are really ill, they constantly park on the drop down bit, over time it will cause wear and tear. Lots of times we can't even get to our house or out of it, its not fair at all.
Wouldn't this just result in people parking on residential roads? I'd imagine it would be a nightmare for them.
It is tricky crossing the road , when loads of cars are passing and parked either side of the road you can't see the oncoming traffic. we need a zebra crossing or lollypop person.
I have a primary school on my road and during the time I’ve lived here (nearly 20 years) the selfishness of the parents drivers has got worse.
They could park further away and walk in but no they all have to park with 10/50 yards. They have no regards for the residents (or even each other, them and their child are more important than anyone else) at pick up and drop off times and also parents evenings.
Although not requested by residents, it must have been the school after complaints to ask for some consideration, about 5 years ago double yellow lines have been put down on some parts which is a negative for the residents as this has now taken parking away from us through no fault of our own, which is annoying especially on the weekend when the residents have visitors. It would have been better for a single yellow line with restricted hours but as with everything the residents not considered.
I think before councils decide to closed any roads they need to properly consult and listen to those that live on them as they will be knock on to the residents near those schools.
The use of buses should also be pushed especially with the £1 fares at the moment.
