Thieves Take Advantage of Mail Strike to Steal Parcels

In the News

This was an ideal situation for a thief to steal a customers' package

The courier didn't even knock or ring the doorbell when he delivered the package, he just placed it under a wheelie bin he had moved to the front door

and left

A short time later the thief simply lifted the wheelie bin and stole the package

I can only assume he was following the driver around to see him leave the packages when people were not at home and took the opportunity to steal them

Or he was just an opportunist thief

Either way this has been happening more lately and 12% of delivered packages were reported lost or stolen between May 2021 and April 2022

I think the drivers should not leave packages at customers addresses if they are not home, it is an open invitation to criminals to steal

I often have parcels left for me because I'm not in. I don't think I've ever had anything stolen however once an Amazon courier put my parcel in my wheelie bin I then put bags of rubbish in the bin without realising it was there and it went out and was collected. Then when I looked on the amazon site to see where my parcel was there was an image of the box in my wheelie bin. So possibly a nice freebie for someone working at a recycling centre of its buried in a landfill somewhere. Amazon refunded me without issue and it never happened again. I question the mental powers of someone who would put a parcel into a wheelie bin but to do so without even leaving a card either. Also there is a little bit of gunk in the bottom of wheelie bins. I don't clean mine so who wants a parcel like that? I've also had parcels left at the front of the house in sight of passer-by's, again there is gate to the back right next to the front door where parcels can be left behind out of sight.

BonzoBanana As You say B, the delivery drivers don't seem to think about where to leave the parcels, they just want to drop off as fast as they can to get finished

telmel Sometimes the delivery drivers leave a card telling me the parcel is next door or I log into my account and a photo of my recycle bin - the paper waste section - contain my parcel.

jam45 The driver must know when the recycle bin is emptied then J, otherwise parcels would end up at the recycling plants , that's tongue in cheek by the way 😉

Porch pirates.

If there's no one home, then the package should not be just left somewhere unattended and rather leave a note to reschedule or pick up at a location.

But if your parcel is delivered by Yodel or Evri.. they'll just leave it somewhere near a door or inside a building, mark it as delivered, and then leave.

PhilipMarc Thats when the problems arise P, you never know who is watching , and at christmas time they know packages could be valuable, such as phones or PCs

telmel Luckily most of the eBay parcels I sent out were before the RM chaos started.

Now, those who still want to send out via RM better wait until the strikes end (hopefully). They better not expand to January 2023. 😑

Amazon are the worst, they leave my parcels on my doorstep, I've watched them get out the van, come down my path and leave on doorstep...haven't even knocked!! I've even left a note on my amazon delivery account saying not to leave them on the doorstep and telling them where to put them. We live on a busy main road and our doorstep is in full view of anyone walking past. 🙄

PinkElephant26 I remember last year they tossed a parcel over the front gate, it was only a new i pad, but luckily it wasn't damaged , i was more surprised as they normally ask you to sign for expensive deliveries

I do have a fair amount of sympathy for the under pressure low paid delivery drivers and try to make an allowance, and yes there is a but coming, they do leave them in silly places at times in full view. Then I complain.

I could never do their job X , low paid and overworked , and on a schedule to finish on time

Mind you i expect some drivers take advantage of the situation

This could be christmas morning in a drivers house
